  • 28 Oct 1903: The is now little doubt in the public mind that Dr. L L. Smith will get in. Two two young lady equestrians (Miss Louise Smith and Miss Sleight) have been for the last week canvassing the district from house to house. Thoroughly understanding their business, and having a good command of language, they would make good parlimentarians themselves. They even boldly entered the enemy's camp and made no small stir in the place. Having done Berwick and the surrnounding district, they started down south, through Beaconsfield, Pakenham, on to Warragul, and are expected to return to headquarters (Beaconsfield) about the middle of next week. ... One the same day [as Argus staff visiting Mr Somers at the Towers] two ponies belonging to Dr. L. L. Smith, whilst standing out side the post office, took fright and bolted in a homeward direction, the drivers and others running after them.   • 21 Oct 1919: GLASSES NOT WASHED. GEELONG, Tuesday.
    Inspector Roche, of the Central Board of Health, proceeded against Rosina E. Payne, of the Farmers' Arms Hotel, Violet Town, at the Geelong Police Court this morning, on a charge of having allowed liquor to be served in glasses that had not been properly cleansed. Her husband. Albert T. Payne, was charged with having served the liquor under these conditions. A fine of £25 was imposed in each case.
    The evidence of the Inspector was that Mrs Payne had the booth at the Geelong races on September 24, where the alleged offence was committed. Rosina Elizabeth Payne15

  • 3 May 1902: A TRANSFER OF LICENCE REFUSED.
    At Berwick licensing court on Wednesday, before Mr. C. A. C. Cresswell, P.M., Mrs. R. Payne applied for the transfer of a victualler's licence for the Pine Grove Hotel, from Mrs. M. E. Creegan. Applicant said she had no money and no means apart from her husband; she had previously held a licence in similar circumstances. The husband of the applicant deposed that his wife had a five years' lease of the hotel. Witness was a farmer and contractor, but returned home nightly. His wife had no money, but he financed the business. The application, he added, was approved by the police, and also by the solicitor to the owner of the property. The wedding was a very quiet one, only the intimate friends of the bride and bridegroom being present. The ceremony was per formed by the Rev. J. Wilson, and the bride, who was given away by her father, wore a handsome tango tweed travelling dress and a smart straw hat trimmed with a ruching of white ostrich feathers. After the wedding breakfast the happy couple, amidst a shower of confetti and good wishes, left for Melbourne, where the honeymoon will be spent.   • 16 Jan 1929: Police Official Retires.
    Senior-constable Bartoli Mafferzoni, who has been in charge of the Richmond plain-clothes police for about 10 years, retired from the force on Tuesday. Constable Mafferzoni joined the police in 1896, and, after 12 months in uniform, was transferred to the plain-clothes branch in Fitzroy, where he was later in charge. He remained there until 1919, when he was transferred to Richmond. He did good service in breaking up the "pushes" which were much in evidence in the district in his earlier days. As a young man he was a noted athlete, and won boxing and wrestling competitions. He won the pigeon shooting championship in 1908 and also exelled as a runner and a cricketer.13
  • 1 Aug 1935: SALE OF PROPERTY.
    Messrs. Gamble, Anderson, Lamb Pty. Ltd., agents, at Berwick, proceeded against Charles Harrison, for the sum of £26/10/, being commission claimed in respect of sale of property at Berwick, during the month of June. This was a case in which a dispute occurred over defendant desiring to reduce the agent’s commission on the reduction of the price of the property.
    Harold Kent Lamb, a member of the firm in question, stated that defendant had placed the sale in the firm’s hands for disposal, at a price of £550, and desired such sale to be expedited. Following this, a client in the person of Mr. Bert Mafferzoni, called, and made an inspection of the property in his presence. Mafferzoni had stated his satisfaction, and on his second visit a sale was effected, but only in the presence of defendant and the firm’s salesman. Defendant, at this interview, had decided to reduce the amount to £530 cash, with the fowls “thrown in.” Making known his transaction with Mafferzoni of the sale, to the salesman, who resented the reduction, a visit was made to the agents’ office, when he (Lamb) objected to the procedure adopted, and eventually defendant said he was not prepared to sell unless the commission was reduced.
    Under cross-examination, witness stated that Mafferzoni had agreed for them to meet at his home on the Monday, to finalise the deal, and that was the reason why no contract had been drawn up then, otherwise he would have done so. This arrangement, however, fell through, as defendant failed to appear.
    Bert Mafferzoni said he had inspected the property, along with Lamb, in the first instance, and on the second inspection, some days after, defendant had asked him to make up his mind, as it might go off in the meantime. He also stated that he would reduce the price to £530, in the event of him purchasing, and that the agent would also have to reduce his commission by a fiver.
    On departure, he further said, if you don’t hear from me you will know the sale is off.
    Charles Harrison (defendant) verified much of the evidence given, but in addition said that Mafferzoni told him that he did not desire to prevent him in any way from disposing of the property, if he could get cash, as he had to dispose of his Kew property before he could do anything. He had offered him a reduction in event of purchase. Had told the agents that owing to the sacrifice made in purchasing price, the commission would also have to be reduced. This they had refused to do, and the sale lapsed.
    After a brief duration, the P.M., who presided alone on this case, felt satisfied that complainant had proved his case, and he made an order for £26/10/, with £9/9/6 costs.

  • 1 Oct 1941: A FORMER well-known member of the Victorian Police Force in Mr Bartolo Mafferzoni passed away at Berwick on Wednesday last, at the venerable age of 73 years. Deceased was a resident of Upper Beaconsfield, and is mourned by his wife and the two surviving members of a family of three —(James and Norma. A Mass for the repose of his soul was celebrated in the Catholic Church, Berwick, last Sunday.15

    Constable Holt, Fitzroy, said he went to the hotel on 20th February at 6.43 p.m. The bar door was open and two men were on the premises.
    The charge of trafficking was with drawn.
    On the bar door charge the licensee was fined £5, and for having persons on the premises she was fined £3. Two men found by the police in the hotel during prohibited hours were each fined £2.10
