Early in December, two young men who were beginning to endear themselves to the community, though of no long association, were killed in a road accident while returning home to Sugar Loaf Road.
The sons of Joan and Arthur Stephenson, Greg, 19, and Rodney, 17, were lost not only to life but to the many friends they had made in sporting and musical circles, to the companionship of the young people in Beaconsfield Upper to whom they had become so personable and important.
District sympathy was, and will remain, extended to their parents and sister Debbie, for fine young men always to be remembered. Gregory Douglas Stephenson4

  • 1 Apr 1915: FRUITGROWERS' AFFAIRS. Export Trade. The State Fruit Gommissioners recently took evidence at Parliament House and more recently at Pakenham and other centres. Pakenham Growers. Financial Matters.
Thomas Montgomery Black, orchardist, said fruit growers had not been considered in the matter of credit foucier loans. Orchard land was valued only on an agricultural basis. He knew a case where he would have given £1300 for an orchard, but the owner could not get a loan of more than £300 on it. An experienced orchardist should do the valuing. In regard to placing the people on orchard land he considered that an eight-year-old orchard of 10 acres would produce £400 in a season.24

Insolvent showed a surplus of £1,815/10/, having set down his assets at £10,647/10/ and his liabilities at £8832.

  • 26 Mar 1923: INSOLVENCIES. An Orchardist's Bankruptcy.
Thomas Montgomery Black, orchardist, of Pakenham Upper, filed his schedule in bankruptcy on Saturday. He set down his assets at £8832 and his liabilities at £10,647, leaving a deficiency of £1815. In explanation of his failure, Black states he was first unable to pay his debts in 1916, when there was a financial stringency, and he was unable to realise on his real estate, worth about £7650. His position had not improved since. He had contracted losses in business. Pressure of creditors and continued inability to realise on his depreciated property to advantage forced him into insolvency. Mr. Hislop, assignee.28
