Newspaper-Articles

  • 28 Sep 1905: Bought a typewriter. CHARGE OF LARCENY. ACCUSED MAN COMMITTED, He is committed for trial.
In the City Court to-day before Mr Panton, P.M., and a Bench of honorary magistrates, a young man, named Joseph Bellamy, was charged with stealing a typewriter, valued at L15 15s, the property of the Empire Typewriter Company.
Mr H. S. Cole appeared to conduct the prosecution, and Dr. A. E. Jones for the defence.
    Accused denied the offence.
Alice von Rantzow, typewriter and instructor, in the employ of the Empire Typewriting Company, 313 Collins street, stated that on the 13th of July last accused called at that office and saw a typewriter, and agreed to buy it for L15 15s, less 2½ per cent, for cash.
The machine was sent to 114 Lonsdale street, on the 14th of July. He said he had a large warehouses there, where he manufactured underclothing for the wholesale business, and that he had 12 sewing machines going.
What did he say about Miss Wheeler?
—He said that she was his head young lady, and I was to teach her how to work the machine.
Was the machine sent?—Yes; it was sent up about 4 o'clock that afternoon.
Did you go to Lonsdale street?— No; I got a message not to go. I have not seen the machine since, and do not know where it is.
Dr. Jones: Has the accused been asked to pay for the machine?
Witness: I do not know that. The typewriter was to be paid for when I went to Lonsdale street on the Saturday morning. The accused had no authority to dispose of the machine.
Claude Green stated that he delivered a typewriter at 114 Lonsdale street on the 14th of July last. It was not the accused to whom he delivered the machine.
James Lucas, collector, employed by the complainant company, stated that accused sent a message to Mrs von Rantzow, on the 15th July last, requesting her not to go to 114 Lonsdale street, on that day. Witness tried to find accused at that place, but could never find him.
Halkei Maloof, shopkeeper, of 114 Lonsdale street, stated that accused never lived at that plaee. His (witness's) daughter carried on business there. There were only three sewing machines used there.
Mr Cole : In July last was a Miss Wheeler employed there?
Witness : No, there was no person of that name employed there in July last.
Detective Considine stated that when accused was taken to the Bourke street West Watchhouse, on the 13th inst., he refused to say what had become of the typewriter. The machine had not been recovered.
This closed the case for the prosecution.
Dr. Jones said that it was a civil case—one of purchase and sale.
The accused, who reserved his defence, was committed to take his trial at the General Sessions, which commence on the 2nd of October next.
Bail was fixed and obtained in one surety in L50.8

  • 5 Jan 1934: EXPLOSION IN FACTORY Workman Seriously Injured
Multiple lacerations and burns to the face were suffered by Abraham Gillies, aged 44 years, Hotham street, East Malvern, when an explosion occurred in the vulcanising room of the Kelso Trading Supply Pty Ltd sheet-metal workers corner of Little Bourke street and Guest lane yesterday morning.
It is believed that the explosion was caused by the accidental combination of certain chemicals used in the making of tyre-patching materials Gillies was engaged in mixing chemicals when the explosion occurred. Pieces of metal severely lacerated Gillies' body. Other workmen who were in the room escaped injury.
Although the explosion was heard more than 100 yards away the workroom was not damaged. Gillies was admitted to the Melbourne Hospital10

  • 18 Jul 1866: REVISION COURTS. HEIDELBERG.
The revision court sat on Monday-present: Mr. Panton, P.M., and Dr. A. E. Macdonald. ... In the Heidelberg district, the names of four rate-payers deceased were struck off, and James Robert Hornby claimed to have his name inserted as occupier, under Mary Jane Porter [sic], of premises known as Darebin Lodge, Alphington. Mr. Durham, the clerk of the Heidelberg Board, said he could have no objection to the insertion of the name, but considered it his duty to call the attention of the court to the fact that Mrs. Parker was assessed to, and had paid the rates for, the premises Mr. Hornby claimed to vote for, and that Mrs. Parker's name was on the ratepayers' list now under revision, and had not been objected to. Now, if the court placed Mr. Hornby's name on the list, they could not take Mrs. Parker's name off, because it had not been objected to. Thus there would be two names on the list for the same property. If Mr. Hornby claimed to have his name inserted as a joint owner with Mrs. Parker, there would be no difficulty, as the 42nd section provides for joint ownership and joint occupancy ; but he claimed as occupier under Mary Jane Parker, and he (the clerk) submitted that some evidence should be given, as provided under the 64th section, to satisfy the Court as to the validity of Mr. Hornby's claim. That this was the proper course was evident from the wording of the 55th section :-" The Court shall insert in the lists under revision the name of every person who shall have so claimed, and be proved to the satisfaction of the Court to be entitled to be inserted on the roll," &c. The Bench, after a long consultation, ordered James Robert Hornby to be called, but he did not appear. The Bench said that it not having been proved to the satisfaction of the Court that Mr. Hornby was entitled to have his name inserted, they declined to insert it. Mary Jane Andrews11
