Newspaper-Articles

  • 16 Mar 1923: BENEFIT UNDER MOTHER'S WILL. Son Cannot be Found.
Before Mr. Justice Weigall, in the Practice Court yesterday, the Equity Trustees, Executors and Agency Company Limited, for whom Mr Walker (instructed by Messrs Leach and Thomson) appeared, applied for permission to administer the estate of Rachael McDonald, a widow, late of Beaconsfield, who died in December, 1919, leaving personal property valued at £2,616 to her two sons, John Neville McDonald, and Duncan McDonald. Mr. Kelly (instructed, by the curator of intestate estates) appeared to oppose the application.
Mr. Walker said that before her death testatrix lived with her brother, Samuel Neville, a bachelor. One of her sons, John Neville McDonald, died in the Alfred Hospital in March, 1915. The other son, Duncan McDonald, went to live in America about 14 years ago. He communicated with his mother up to the time of her death. On January 8, 1920, Samuel Neville, who had since died, wrote to Duncan McDonald, informing him that his mother had died. The letter was returned unclaimed. Attempts to discover the whereabouts of the missing son by advertisements were unsuccessful. None of his relatives in Victoria had any knowledge of his whereabouts.
After hearing argument Mr. Justice Weigall decided that the estate should be administered by the curator of intestate estates.13

  • 4 Oct 1923: MR. JOHN MULCAHY.
On Saturday, 22nd September, the death occurred of Mr. John Mulcahy, one of the oldest identities of the Pakenham district. Born in Pakenham about 78 years ago, he had been a resident for that long period, and had been keenly interested in and associated with the progress and development of his birthplace. His was the kindly and generous nature so characteristic of his parents and all the grand old pioneers. His genial disposition won for him a large circle of frends, who held him in high esteem.
The late Mr. Mulcahy was a practical Catholic, having been a faithful member and supporter of the Sacred Heart Sodality and the Altar Society. He will be sadly missed from his accustomed place in the church. The funeral took place on Sunday, 23rd ult., and the large attendance was evidence of the respect in which the deceased gentleman had been held. Friends and relatives came from Melbourne, Gippsland, and other districts to pay a last tribute to one whom they esteemed. The remains were conveyed to St. Patrick's Church, where prayers were recited by Rev. H. Lynch, assisted by Rev. .J. S. Bourke, S.J., both of whom also officiated at the graveside in Pakenham Cemetery, to which the lengthy funeral cortege then proceeded. The coffin was borne by Messrs. S. O'Brien (Cowwarr), J. B. Lia and J. D. Hunt (Pakenham), F. O'Brien (Nar-Nar-Goon), M. and A. Robertson (Melbourne). The pallbearers were Messrs. J. Mulcare, M. Smith (Nar-Nar-Goon), H. Bourke (Monomeith). J. J. Ahern, T. A. Kelly, and R. Webster (Pakenham). Mr. Mulcahy left a widow and three daughters to mourn the loss of a kind husband and devoted father. R.I.P.10
