  • 10 Sep 1887: A FASHIONABLE WEDDING. The marriage of Mr Joseph Henry Propsting to Miss Beatrice Alice Butler was solemnised at St. Paul's Church on Thursday, 1st inst. The ceremony took place at 11.30, the Rev. Dr Bromby read ing the service. The bride was given away by her uncle, Mr Butler, of the firm of Messrs Sargood, Butler and Niclioll. She was attended by the two sisters of the bridegroom, Miss Propsting and Miss S. E. Propsting. The wedding costume was of cream satin, made with a square train, and lace draperies of the same color ; a pearl pendant, veil, wreath and bouquet completed the pretty toilette. The brides maids' dresses were of white cashmere and satin, trimmed with the latter material in a delicate shade of heliotrope. Both the young ladies carried bouquets, and wore, the one a white straw bonnet, and the other a hat of similar color. Mr W. J. Turner, the well-known organist of St. Paul's, played Mendelssohn's "Athalie" as the bridal party entered the church, and the favorite "Wedding March" at the conclusion of the ceremony. The wedding breakfast was held at the George Hotel, the guests attending it be ing only the very intimate friends of the bride and bridegroom. The church was fairly well filled with spectators, whose attention was often attracted to the pretty motto placed above the Communion-table, and bearing the words, "Peace and Happiness." it was the work of Mr M'Carthy, the verger, and looked very appropriate. The entrance from the pathway to the church door was covered with a very hand some crimson carpet, which stood out in good contrast against the snowy dresses of the bridal party. The happy young couple intend to make Beechworth their home, the bridegroom having taken Richmond House, Newtown.7

  • 18 May 1905: WEDDINGS. BUTLER—KING.
The marriage of W. A. Butler, of Melbourne (legal mining manager), son of J. T. Butler, Esq., "Egoline," Wattle-tree road, Malvern, with Nellie, daughter of Mrs. Edward King, Deniliquin, New South Wales, was celebrated on April 24, 1905, at St. Martin's Church, Hawksburn, Melbourne, the Rev. Holyoak Rust officiating. The church was beautifully decorated with evergreens, autumn leaves and roses; also a collection of choice flowers were arranged artistically about the chancel rails. Mr. Allan, the organist, most ably rendered musical selections, including "The Voice that Breathed o'er Eden" and "Wedding March."
The bride, who was given away by Councillor T. J. Davey, of Melbourne, wore a charming gown of ivory panne satin, style early Victorian with court train hanging from one shoulder, draped with handsome real Irish lace, finished with puffings of panne satin and accordion pleated chiffon. Irish lace, transparent yoke, with narrow lace frillings, and orange blossom completed a very handsome gown. Her embroidered veil was arranged over a cluster of orange blossom, and she wore a "Nellie Stewart" bangle and pearl and diamond earrings, the gifts of the bridegroom, who also gave the bouquet of azoleas, moss roses and ferns, with long streamers of satin ribbons. The bride's gift was a hand-painted bevel shaving, mirror. The two bridesmaids, Misses Beatrice and Dorothy Propsting, nieces of the bridegroom, wore sweet gowns of white organdie muslin, with tulle veils; their bouquets and wreaths were of autumn tinted leaves and chrysanthemums, with ferns; these, with gold and sapphire wishbone brooches, were the gifts of the bridegroom. The bride and bridegroom left the church amidst showers of confetti and rose leaves, while a pretty incident was the placing of a beautiful horseshoe of camellias and ferns on the bride's arm by the bridegroom's sister, Mrs. Propsting. After the ceremony a reception and champagne breakfast was held at Paris Cafe, Collins-street, where the health of the happy couple was proposed by Mr. G. W. Bruce and responded to by the bridegroom ; that of the parents by Mr. T. Davey, and responded to by Mr. J. H. Butler (Stock Exchange, Melbourne); the bridesmaids and absent friends by Mr. T. J. Davey, and responded to by Mr. J. McNeill, of Melbourne, who also acted as best man. Mr. and Mrs. Butler left by the afternoon train for "Braemar," Macedon, where the honeymoon is to be spent, and afterwards at Esplanade Hotel, St. Kilda, the going-away gown being of old rose cloth, trimmings to match of chiffon velvet and aprlique, moss green hat, with three' shades of trailing pink rosebuds and foliage and marmot fur and muff. They were the recipients of numerous presents and valuable cheques. Ellen King9
