  • 13 Jul 1903: DEATH OF A CENTENARIAN. MELBOURNE, Sunday.
    Mrs. Catherine Buchanan died at Lower Beaconsfield, Victoria, on Wednesday. She had nearly reached the age of 107. Deceased was born on December 28, 1796, near Portsea, in the Isle of Skye. Up to within a week of her death she could see to read and thread a needle without spectacles. Her descendants number 174, viz , 6 children (eldest nearly 90), 47 grandchildren, 124 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren. The five generations were represented among large numbers who followed the remains of the venerable lady to the cemetery.4
  • 14 Jul 1903: On Friday last the remains of Mrs. Catherine Buchanan were interred in the Berwick Cemetery, in the presence of a large assemblage of people. The deceased lady was close on 107 years of age, having been born at Portree, in the Isle ot Skye, on the 28th of December, 1796. She came of a good old Gaelic stock-the M'Leods, farmers and graziers-and arrived in Victoria when 56 years of age, a widow, with four surviving children. The family began grazing and farming at Coburg, then at Wallan Wallan, and for many years past at Lower Beaconsfield, where Mrs. Buchanan died on Wednesday last. Her descendants number 182, comprised of 4 children, 47 grandchildren, 121 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren, all four generations being represented at the funeral. Her husband died in 1840, and she thus survived him 63 years.5
