Newspaper-Articles

  • 20 May 1942: Berwick. OLD ESTABLISHED BUSINESS SOLD.
WHEN Mr. John Grant, Berwick’s octogenarian undertaker—he is 82—recently disposed of his old-established business to Wm. J. Garnar and Son, of Dandenong, two very old firms were merged. Both have been operating since the very early days. Mr. John Grant established his business when Berwick was young and has carried it on successfully right up to date despite his increasing years. Under the terms of the sale he will act as Wm. J. Garnar’s representative in Berwick.
Coming into being when the late Mr. J. W. Garnar purchased the undertaking business from the last Mr John Hemmings, its founder in Dandenong, the firm now known as Wm. J. Garnar and Son has had a long and successful career. It’s scope should be considerably extended by this latest expansion.20
  • 17 Mar 1943: Death Of Berwick Octogenarian.
ANOTHER of Berwick’s dwindling band of grand old men, in the person of Mr. John Grant, breathed his last in the Berwick Bush Nursing Hospital on Monday. A native or Berwick, he spent the whole of his 82 years there and was one of the best known of the town's old identities.
He was the eldest son of the late Robert and Agnes Grant, and was a nephew of the late Hon. James Buchanan. Ever since he was able to take up the trade, the late Mr. Grant started out as a coachbuilder and undertaker. Very active for his age, he conducted a business in High street, Berwick, right up until 9 months ago. Even after disposing of it, he continued his interest until the end. Universally esteemed and respected, the late Mr Grant was almost a part of the town itself and was universally liked and respected. His fatal illness descended on him a fortnight ago when he suffered a stroke from which he never recovered. He was admitted to the Berwick B.N. Hospital, but failed to rally and passed away on Monday.
The funeral cortege, a very large and representative one, left his home in High street today for the Berwick cemetery, with which he was closely connected for most of his life.
The Rev. C. Jones performed the last sad rites and W. J. Garnar and Sons had charge of the funeral.
The pall-bearers were Evan Henry, N. Beaumont, J. Richardson, A. Buchanan, Len Lindsay, J. Thomas, J. Kirkham and Clyde Greaves.21
  • 7 May 1943: JOHN GRANT, Late of Berwick, Retired Wheelwright, Deceased. - After fourteen clear days Jane Buchanan Grant, of Berwick, spinster, the executrix appointed by the deceased's will, dated the twenty-sixth day of June, 1905, will APPLY to the Supreme Court for a grant of PROBATE of the said WILL (William James Grant, the executor appointed by the said will, having predeceased the testator).

  • 10 Oct 1942: SET IN MELBOURNE. THE GO-GETTER, by LEONARD MANN. Sydney: Angus and Robertson); 7/8,
Here, in "The Go-Getter," is an Australian novel that is Australian, not because It is branded with the emu and kangaroo, or because it is redolent of mulga and reeking with horse, but because it is Australian in spirit. Mr Leonard Mann has not fallen into the pit of writing an English novel with an Australian background. His people belong to the country mentally and psychologically. They blend in with the Melbourne setting as though they belonged. His leading figure, Chris Gibbons, is no squatter or social light. Judged from the average point of view, Chris is rather shady in character, but his shadiness merely mirrors his environment. He is on the outer fringe of society. Through his misplaced loyalty to a blackguard a County Court judge had said some unpleasant things about him as a witness. His policy in life had been "easy money"-nothing that the law could take hold of, but he sailed close to the wind. Then the depression caught him. He was deserted by his wife and found himself with the responsibility of his 2 children. Chris gritted his teeth and hung on. Then came temptation through a shady lawyer. There was money, but risk. Mr Mann's story is that of the transaction in which Chris, fell, and through which he rose.
Mr Mann handles his material with the touch of an artist. He makes Chris real, and the girl, Phyllis, an honest medium of his salvation. All his characters are faithfully drawn, and equally well he paints in the background of the city that is so much a part of the story.-E.C.20
