  • 23 Apr 1914: THE LATE MRS. ROBERT KEYS.
The death of Mrs. Charlotte Keys, relict of the late Mr. Robert Keys, took place last week at her late residence, "Como," Chesterville road, Cheltenham. Mrs. Keys was 94 years of age, and it is claimed that up to the time of her demise she was the oldest resident of the electorate. Mrs. Keys was born in Dublin, and came out to Melbourne in 1842 in the ship "Martin Luther," landing at Liardet's Beach (now Port Melbourne). She was married in St. James' Church in 1847, and came out to live with her husband, who had settled in Brighton in 1845.
Mr. Robert Keys was one of seven brothers, who, with their father, Mr. George Keys, have become widely known throughout the district, from Brighton and Dandenong down to Bass Straits, and after whom Keysborough is named. Mr. Keys was one of the seven members elected to the first Brighton Borough Council in 1859. Subsequently he became a member of the Moorabbin Shire Council, occupying the presidential chain in 1872. He was also the first treasurer of the Brighton Union Lodge, G.U.O.F.
Deceased's family consisted of 9 sons and a daughter, of whom three sons now survive (Messrs. George Keys, Thomas Keys and John Keys).
largely esteemed by a wide circle of friends, and was a consistent church worker and supporter of St. Matthew's Church of England. A private funeral was held on Thursday, the place of interment being the Cheltenham Cemetery. Relatives and a few personal friends were present, and the Revs. Crotty and Moorhouse officiated at the graveside. The pall-bearers were:- Messrs Oldreever, Bradshaw, Cornwall, Shephard, Revs. J. B. Sharp and Betts. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. A. A. Sleight.8
