  • 23 May 1951: Businessman's Sudden Death While Golfing
DANDENONG and district friends of Mr. George Fenwick Crosby, well known proprietor of the Willow Cafe, in Lonsdale St. for many years, were shocked and saddened to learn of his sudden collapse and death while out enjoying a game of golf at Forest Hills last Saturday' afternoon. The writer was only talking to him in his shop before he went out, and he was then looking forward to his game and apparently in his usual state of health.
He was only 59 years of age and leaves a wife, Nora, three sons (Bob, Frank and Harry) and one daughter, Judy, to mourn his passing.
Born at St. Kilda, the late Mr. Crosby was an orchardist at Pakenham Upper from 1914 to 1939 before retiring from the land to go into the cafe business in Dandenong 12 years ago.
The esteem in which he was held was evident from the large attendance at his funeral on Monday afternoon, following a service at his home by the Rev. J. A. Finlay. Rev. Finlay also officiated at the Spring Vale Crematorium. There were many beautiful floral tributes. The casket was carried by Bob, Frank, Harry and E. Crosby, and the pallbearers were Messrs. B. Taylor, P. Walsh, W. Titcher, T. Black, A. Ewart, E. Bailey, T. Bain and I. Jennings. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of W. J. Garnar and Son.4

  • 13 Apr 1917: CONCRETE FOOTPATHS. (TO THE EDITOR)
Sir,—In looking over your issue of 5th April, I was pleased to see that others besides myself are taking an interest in the manner in which shire work is carried out. I was also pleased to see the stand taken by Councillor James. Apparently some councillors consider that those outside the council are ignorant, while they themselves are infallible, but the boot is beginning to pinch and will pinch still more with the heavy traffic to the railway station and without water channels.
About two years ago our council called tenders for kerbing and channeling McLeod and Nicholson streets. To my surprise some gravel was brought along. I asked what it was for, and the contractor replied, "For making concrete." I then told Cr Munro that I had seen work carried out where hundreds of thousands of tons of concrete were made, and that gravel would not be used as it was unfit for the work. It has proved so to our cost.
Some time after this I saw the same material being used in a drain that was being erected across the street near the Recreation ground. I called the attention of three councillors to the fact. I also wrote to the council, asking for a hearing, when, with a good intention, I would produce samples, as I had mixed concrete that was a success 40 years before, and about 300 barrels since. To my surprise when my letter was read, Cr. Lynn moved that the engineer report on the matter at next meeting. I then asked for a hearing in justice to myself, as I had called attention to the matter. I then showed the difference between my concrete and the stuff put down as concrete for the council, and asked that a committee, with the
engineer, make an inspection, when I would point out the defects in the work complained of. After lunch we met, and the first time I drew their attention to a defect they scattered. None are so blind as those who will not see. On arriving at the drain with Cr F. Nixon, Cr Lynn was digging, and he found the work as I said before I left.
It was then understood that no more of that sort of material was to be used, but to my surprise I saw the same sort of material used in the foundations of the footpaths, with a plaster a quarter of an inch thick at the most, with different shades—a plaster that will break away the same as in Forrest road cross drains. For this sort of work, three inches thick, we have to pay about 6½d per square foot, and it won't stand foot wear with all their science. Yet with practical knowledge I made footpaths and cement cow shed floors six years ago, and they are as good to-day as ever.
With cement at 22s per barrel the cost works out at about 4½d per foot, for work 3 inches thick, without the fancy plaster, as it is all the same material broken stone.
Kerbing and channeling done by me in front of Mr Drevermann's store about twelve years ago that did not cost the council a farthing is as good as ever. This is proof that if the proper material is used and the work not done by contract (so as to be sure the proper amount of K.B. cement is used) the concrete will be a success even if it costs more. We don't want after spending about £400 in two years to create instead of an asset a liability that we shall have to keep in repair.
Yet it disturbs the temper of some of these councillors that a ratepayer should have the presumption to address them about a grievance. They prefer to let the engineer carry out his own sweet will at our expense.
What has become of our stone crusher? Has the council made scrap iron of it? We paid about £120 for it instead of getting a single horse portable one ready to go to work and save expense in cracking stone.
I could get road metal delivered over one and a half miles at 5/6 per yard; where Mr Wilson had 26 feet of stripping to take off the rock at Berwick.
    Yours etc.,— E. J. PARDEW.9
