  • 10 Jan 1883: BEACONSFIELD. (From a Correspondent.) The pretty hills around Beaconsfield were rendered prettier still by the brilliant company which assembled on St. George's Hill to do honor to Professor and Mrs. Halford on the occasion of the marriage of their daughter Edith to Mr. John Dight Harrison. The Rev. W. Wood, assisted by the Rev. J. M. Easterling officiated. The bride's dress consisted of a very rich cream brocade, trimmed very tastefully with lace on crystal ferns. The wreath of orange and jasmine flowers, with a handsome veil edged with three rows of narrow cream silk, and very handsome jewellery completed the costume. The bouquet accompanying it was very tastefully arranged. The two bridesmaids wore nun's veiling trimmed with lace, with white fowers fastened by a brooch. Pretty bouquets completed their toilets, nothing being worn in the hair. After the breakfast, which was served by Miss Sullivan, late of Gunsler's. Some played lawn-tennis, some cricket, and others explored the shaded fern tree gullies, these probably sowing the seed for many other such happy days as that which had dawned on the youthful pair. Newspaper-Articles

  • 7 Apr 1886: A question of interest to poundkeepers and owners of cattle (says the Age) was argued before the Full Court on Friday.
Towards the close of last October a cow and a heifer, belonging to Professor G. B. Halford, of Melbourne University, broke the fence of a paddock at Beaconsfield, near Berwick, where they were kept, and escaped. On the 16th November, Mr. Egbart M. Halford, son of the Professor, found the cattle in a paddock known as "Brown's paddock" a mile, or three quarters of a mile, from the Berwick pound. He got the key of the paddock from a Mrs. Gardiner, who had charge of it, and removed the cattle to his father's place. It appeared that the cattle were impounded at Berwick on the 30th October by one John Crean, and that there being no grass in the pound the keeper, Thomas White, removed them to Brown's paddock, where he had the right to graze cattle. On the 10th December E. M. Halford was summoned to the Berwick police court for having rescued cattle which had been impounded. Mrs. Gardiner stated that she told Mr. Halford that the cattle had been impounded, and that he replied he had seen the poundkeeper and released them. Halford, however, alleged that he was not aware till the day after he recovered the animals that they had been impounded. The magistrates convicted the defendant of having rescued the cattle, and fined him 10s. Application was made on Friday to the Supreme Court to quash the conviction on the ground that the poundkeeper had no power to remove the cattle from the pound to Brown's paddock for grazing purposes, and that a person removing them from the paddock could not be convicted of having rescued them.
The court reserved judgement. Mr. Hodges appeared for Halford, and Mr. Hood for the poundkeeper. George Britton Halford6
