We cannot all serve abroad again, but we could be effective at home, and so release others. In the Dandenongs, for example, instructors could be appointed to specified districts—now and without delay—to visit various centres on certain nights and afternoons to give us instruction in the use of modern weapons, thus brushing up our previous training. Brief Description
Letters from O.M.'s:
HUGH CRESSWELL ANTHONY, who was at the School from 1901 to 1905, is a prisoner. He writes thus from Gutersloh, Germany, that he is well, and says the camp is the best and largest in Germany, with officers from almost every allied country; fourteen tennis courts, hockey grounds, cricket nets, etc. He says: "It was on the occasion of our second visit to Pozieres, and on the night of August 18th that we had only gone about fifty yards when something hit me on the funny bone. The arm was broken, so off we went for about another hundred yards, but, alas, I lost a lot of blood, became weak, and was forced to rest in a shell-hole. No stretcher-bearers were to be seen. I was getting weaker, although not in any pain, so I decided to cast my equipment off and get back to our lines, thence to our dressing station. It was easier said than done, the ground being all shell holes. 'Verey light' seemed to be going up from all four sides, shells and machine guns were cracking on all sides, and I lost direction. There was a road close by, and I thought that once on it I could not miss our trench, so I got there in due course, but it looked different. However, I went along it for a bit, then turned off to the left at a point which I thought would take me to our 'hopping-off' trench. Well, I wandered and fell about till at last I saw a trench which wasn't showing any signs of activity. I was positive it was the trench we had just left, so I flopped into it. Even when I got in I was still sure of my ground. As I turned the first traverse I was greeted with 'Yah! Votz! Gotz! Thiz!' etc. and was promptly grabbed by the throat . They soon saw I was just about all out. They lowered me to the ground, bandaged my arm amid great excitement. They made one soldier get out of his dug-out into which I was put. One chap gave me a drink of coffee. I was escorted away through our shell fire to a dressing station, and eventually found myself at the hospital, where I remained till September 5th. We were well cared for, and my arm, the left, made rapid progress. No bones were broken; it had practically healed when I entered the Munster Hospital (5/9/16). We arrived here on the 12/9/16. I was in the camp hospital here for a day, but am now perfectly well."
War Service Particulars:
HUGH CRESSWELL ANTHONY enlisted on 12th May 1915 and embarked as acting Sergeant to Reinforcements for 22nd Battalion on 27th October 1915, arriving in Egypt on 25th November. He received his commission on 11th November 1915, and on 14th March 1916 was taken on strength of 7th Battalion. On 1st April he arrived in France, and after taking part in the first attack on Pozieres in July 1916 he was on 1st August promoted to Lieutenant. During the second attack on Pozieres he was on 18th August wounded and made a Prisoner of War, being held as such in Germany for two years and two month. He was then exchanged to Holland, and in due course after Armistice reached England. He was promoted to Captain on 15th August 1918 and returned to Australia in May 1919. His appointment was terminated on 15th May 1919.

A very pretty wedding took place at the St Paul's Church of England, Korumburra, on Saturday, April 14, the contracting parties being Ernest Richard, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs A. Brown, of Beaconsfield, and Ruby Aileen, second youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs M. Marnell, of Bena, and formerly of Newry. Rev H O. Watson officiated. The bride, who was given away by her father, was becomingly attired in a white crepe-de-chene frock, with side panels touched with silver lace and caught with orange blossom. She carried a shower bouquet of white cactus dahlias and ferns. The bridesmaids were Miss Lily Marnell, sister of the bride, who wore a powder blue crepe-de-chene relieved with silver lace, and hair band to match, and Miss Muriel Brown, sister of the bridegroom, who was frocked in pale pink crepe-de-chene relieved with lace, and hair band to match. Mr Charles Craner, of St. Vincents' Palace, Albert Park, acted as best man, and Mr Gordon Whelan, of Outtrim, as groomsman. After the ceremony was performed an adjournment was made to Mrs McHarg's cafe, where breakfast was served. The happy couple left by the evening train for Melbourne. Their future home will be at Beaconsfield. Ernest Richard Brown14
