World War I

Henry Gordon Field was a stonemason aged 23 when he enlisted on 7 April 1915 with the 23rd Battalion, C Company. SERN 966. His unit embarked on 10 May 1915 from Melbourne on board HMAT A14 Euripides.
He served on the Western Front and was wounded in the back on 31 Aug 1918 and conveyed to England.
He was a Commissioned Lieutenant when he returned to Australia on 18 Jan 1919.1

    When Senior-constable Crilly and Constable Moran visited a motor-truck in Burwood road, near the Tower Hotel, Auburn, on Tuesday, they found Charles John Closter, orchardist, Junction road, Tunstall, lying across the driving wheel. When Closter was induced to alight he was unsteady on his feet and smelt of liquor, according to evidence given at the Hawthorn Court on Wednesday. Closter was charged with having been drunk in charge of the truck.
    Closter said that he was not in good health. He had not been to bed on the previous night and was suffering from fatigue.
    Closter was convicted and fined £5.20
