  • 12 Jul 1889: COLLAPSE OF A BUILDING IN PRAHRAN. NARROW ESCAPE OF THE INMATES.
Early yesterday morning a two-story building situated in 44 Chapel street, Prahran, and occupied by Mr. F. Johns as a painter's and paperhanger's shop and dwelling house, collapsed suddenly, and Mr. Johns and his family, who were in the dwelling at the time, had a very narrow escape for their lives. The collapse was caused by the excavations which had been made on the land immediately adjoining the building. This land is owned by a Mr. Delaney of St Kilda, who is having an arcade erected upon it, and the excavations were made for the purpose of putting in the necessary foundations. When the workmen ceased work on Wednesday they shored up the wall of Mr John's premises with two stays. Soon after midnight, however, the inmates of the house became alarmed by serious cracking noises which they heard, and by the falling of the plaster from the ceilings. As these noises continued they left the house, and took refuge in a store room in the yard at the rear of the building. Soon afterwards the front portion of the building came crashing down, and the place was a complete wreck. Next door is another shop occupied by Mr. C. A. Woess, a basketmaker, which also shows signs of collapse, but every precaution has been taken to prevent any further subsidence. [see image of shop]10

Thomas, of Berwick, arrived back on the “Orcades” to complete a most enjoyable six weeks’ holiday in West Australia. With Mr. and Mrs. Bill McGowan, of Dandenong, the party of six motored over to Perth in easy stages, leaving here on March 10th, and arriving on March 18.
They drove two cars, and the R.A.C.V. arranged their schedule for them. They stopped overnight at Mt. Gambier, Adelaide (two nights and a day). Iron Knob, Ceduna, Madura Pass, Norseman and Merredin, arriving at Perth on the 18th. The men were playing bowls next morning. For variety, Mr. and Mrs. Westaway and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas decided to return by boat. They freighted the car home by the “Westralia” and travelled on the Orcades themselves. It is a wonderful ship, Mr. Westaway declares. Mr. and Mrs. McGowan preferred to make the return trip by car.16

  • 30 Apr 1943: EMERALD IDENTITY PASSES
When the remains of the late Mr Frank Worrell of Emerald were interred at the Macclesfield Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon, friends and relatives came from far and near to pay their last respects to one of Emerald's grand old men. Deceased, who was 88 years of age, passed away at the home of his son at Emerald, on Monday, 26th April; he had lived in the district for 25 years, and had gathered around him many sincere friends, all of whom heard of his passing with sorrow and a sense of deep personal loss, Until war broke out Mr Worrell took a keen interest in local sporting bodies, and his sons, who were the backbone of the football and cricket teams, were a source of pride to him.
He leaves a widow and family of six sons (Jack, Frank, Charles, Tom, Clem and Jim) and four daughters (Molly, Ann, Irene, Cora and Joyce).
Rev Seward conducted the service at the graveside.6
