Newspaper-Articles

  • 14 Mar 1903: The funeral of the late Mr Charles Cochrane, of Clayton, who was engaged on this journal for over thirteen years, and who passed away on the 6th inst, after a protracted illness of over 12 months, took place last Sunday afternoon in the Cheltenham cemetery. As showing the esteem in which the deceased was held in the district, a large number of friends assembled at the grave. Including several of his colleagues, to pay their last tribute of respect. A goodly number of residents in private vehicles also joined in the cortege as it passed through Cheltenham, and the members of the Protestant Alliance Lodge conducted a ceremony at the graveside after the usual burial service had been held. Several handsome wreaths adorned the coffin, including one from his fellow employes on "The Herald" and "Weekly Times" staffs. The deceased was a grandson of the late Mr James Cochrane, one of the pioneers of the South Brighton district, and was much esteemed and respected for his good qualities.6
