  • 20 Apr 1917: WIFE DESERTION. Gilbert Barby was charged with deserting his wife, Elizabeth Agnes Barby. When the case was called on Mrs. Barby refused to give evidence, statng that she did not wish to go on with the case. Mr. Philpott, J.P.: This is most extraordinary. The wife puts the law in motion, and defendant has had to be brought from Deniliquin, and at the last moment complainant refuses to proceed. The costs in the case amounted to £4 1s. 9d., and he would like to know who was going to pay this amount. On the application of Sergeant Ivey, the case was adjourned for thirteen weeks.12
