Newspaper-Articles

  • 21 Dec 1897: Death of father: DEATH OF MR. ANDREW LYELL. An honourable record of over 44 years' commercial life in Melbourne, dating from the palmy days of the gold diggins, when the city was still in its teens, was closed on Saturday morning by the death of Mr. Andrew Lyell, senior partner in the firm of Lyell and Butler, accountants, of Queen-street. Not less as a genial spirited friend than as an able financier was Mr. Lyell widely appreciated, and in both capacities he had long been one of the best known men in Melbourne. The cause of his death was congestion of the liver and kidneys, the outcome of a severe chill sustained about five weeks ago. He was twice married, and the surviving members of his family are his second wife, seven daughters and one son.3
