  • 12 Oct 1912: DROVER HANGS HIMSELF. END OF DRINKING BOUT.
Dr. R. H. Cole, the Coroner, investigated the circumstances surrounding the death of Thomas Finlayson Hooper, a drover, 42 years of age, who was found hanging in a shed at Mount Waverley on October 6 after a drinking bout.
James Denton Fethers, company officer, residing at Finch street, Malvern, identified the body. Hooper was a married man, and his wife was residing in New South Wales. He was addicted to drink for years past.
James Shackleton, slaughterman, said that he spoke to Hooper on October 5. Hooper asked for a drink, and said, "My hand is shaking. I did not expect the shakes till to-morrow. I'm dreading it. I have paid hundreds of pounds to cure myself of it." He also spoke to Mr and Mrs Ralph. Witness gave him some food, and afterwards made him a shakedown in a waggon in the shed. Next morning he saw the body hanging. Hooper had taken a halter from the stable to hang himself.
Dr Cole found that Thomas F. Hooper committed suicide by hanging himself. There was evidence of long continued intemperance.6
