Gibb and D. Bourke. Mr. G. Gardiner reported having collected rates in Pakenham riding amount ing to £217 16s., leaving arrears £31 18s. Beaconsfield riding, £90 3s; arrears, £11 16s.8
  • 9 May 1893: SERIOUS ACCIDENT TO A SHIRE ENGINEER., BERWICK, MONDAY.
    A very serious accident befell Mr Jas Gardiner, the Berwick shire engineer, on Saturday night. He had ridden to Pakenham on Saturday morning to meet the members of the Berwick Shire Council for the purpose of inspecting certain contract works in dispute in the Pakenham riding about half-past 5 p.m. he parted company with the councillors at the Pakenham railway station and nothing more was known of his movements until he was found yesterday morning about 9 o'clock lying in an unconscious state on the main Gippsland road between Pakenham and Officer, where he had evidently been thrown from his horse during the previous night. Dr W Howard James, of Berwick was immediately summoned to attend Mr Gardiner, and pronounced the case very serious. Today he is still unconscious and in a very critical state. , William Howard James9
  • 29 Jun 1893: BERWICK, TUESDAY. Mr. James Gardiner, the Berwick shire engineer, who was thrown from his horse one night last month, died in the Alfred Hospital at 2 o'clock this morning, from the effects of the injuries he received. The deceased leaves a widow and three young children.10
