  • 5 Apr 1890: Mr. I. Roff, the genial and respected billposter for over 32 years in Melbourne, is about to take a well-earned holiday by visiting the old country. He leaves this month by the " Austral" for London, where he will no doubt be welcomed by many identities of the stage who have visited these shores from time to time, for few residents in Melbourne are better known and respected than Mr. Isaac Roff.14
  • 26 Apr 1890: SEND OFF TO I. ROFF. A very large gathering of representative citizens of Melbourne met on Thursday afternoon, at Menzies' Hotel, to wish bon voyage to Mr. Isaac Roff, who leaves to-day by the "Austral," on a visit to the old country, after an absence of 38 years. Mr. E. L. Zox, M.L.A., was voted to the chair, and after the usual loyal toasts had been dealt with he proposed the health of the guest in most eulogistic terms. He spoke of him as a citizen, as a business man, and as a friend. The toast was drunk most enthusiastically, and endorsed by Messrs Robertson, W. C Sprigg, Frank Stuart, M L. A., Cr. John Anderson, and Captain Chas. Taylor, M.L.A. Before the guest responded Mr. R. G. Johnson, Hon. secretary to the movement, read the following address, which was presented to Mr. Roff by the chairman. "To Isaac Roff, Esq. Melbourne, 24th April, 1890.' Dear Sir, —We, the undersigned, being members of the commercial community and old residents of Melbourne, having been informed of your intention of visiting the old country after your 38 years' residence in this colony, take this opportunity of wishing you a pleasant journey and a safe return. There are few men who have more fully earned the esteem and goodwill of their fellow citizens by a life of consistent integrity than yourself, and we take with pleasure the opportunity now presented of expressing our high appreciation of your many estimable qualities as a business man and a private citizen. We hope that your journey will have the effect, of fully establishing your health, and that we shall soon be able to welcome you back; amongst us." Signed by all the gentlemen present. Mr. Roff, upon rising to respond to the toast of his health, was greeted by loud cheers. After thanking those present for their kind expression of feeling, said he looked forward with pleasure to meeting them all again on his return.15
