  • 22 Sep 1903: DIED SUDDENLY. CORONIAL INQUIRY.
The adjourned inquest into the circumstances of the death of James Leonard Wallis, 63 years of age, which took place at his home, Lord Street, Richmond, was resumed by the District Coroner, Dr. R. H. Cole, at the Morgue this morning. At the opening of the inquest, the deceased's widow, Edith Blanche Wallis, gave evidence of identification, and Dr. Mollison testified to the results of his post-mortem examination. The doctor then stated that although there were well-marked Bright's disease of the kidney and hypertrophy of the heart, the general
appearances were not altogether consistent with death from these affections.
Certain symptoms were apparent but might be produced by strychnine, and the doctor added that without an analysis of the stomach, he would not be satisfied that death was due to natural causes.
Berry Wilkinson, Government Analyst, this morning stated that he had made an analysis of the stomach of deceased. The result of his examination was entirely negative.
Dr. Mollison, recalled, said that after hearing the evidence of Mr Wilkinson, he was of opinion that death was due to disease of the kidneys and heart.
Mrs Wallace, recalled, said that her husband called her to his room at about 11.15 p.m. on the 5th inst. He died a quarter of an hour afterwards.
The Coroner returned a verdict that death was due to disease of the kidneys and heart.9
