  • 17 Oct 1946: Saint's Master And Quiz. Expert Dies. The Rev. William Henry Irwin, 62, of Marlborough street, College Park, died today in a private hospital. Well-known in college, sporting, Freemason, and radio circles, he was a housemaster and senior history master at St. Peter's College. In recent years he became one of the State's keenest quiz experts, He was noted for his work in the session. "Information. Please."
    Mr Irwin, who was born in Melbourne, was a teacher at the Trinity Grammar School, Kew, before being ordained about 40 years ago. He joined the staff at St. Peter's College in 1913, and enlisted in the artillery in World War I, subsequently becoming a chaplain. Active in Freemasonry, he was Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of South Australia, and Deputy First Grand Principal of the Royal Arch Chapter. He was also chaplain of the St. Peter's Collegiate Lodge. Another interest was in the Church Missionary Society of South Australia, of which he was president. Mr. Irwin played league football for Melbourne in his younger days and was also a keen cricketer. In later years he played golf. A well-read and scholarly man, Mr. Irwin had a lovable disposition, and was noted for his sense of humor. He was popular with both students and colleagues. He has left a widow, two sons, Colonel W. M. Irwin, and Mr. G. W. Irwin, and a daughter. Mrs. C. Wilmot (England). After a service in the college chapel tomorrow at 2.30 p.m., the funeral will leave for the North Road Cemetery. Mr. Irwin had been in hospital for less than a fortnight.8

    Further plans for the establishment of cottage homes for aged people, to be known as the Sunset Homes were further discussed at a largely attended meeting at the Women's Service Club yesterday afternoon. The movement is one that is making a big appeal, and Many offers of help were forthcoming. Mrs. A. V. Roberts (president), who, with Dr. Morris, is the founder of the scheme, was in the chair. Dr. Morris (hon. secretary) and Mrs. T. J. Ley (hon. treasurer) were also on the platform. It was announced that Sir Arthur Rickard had given a ten-acre block of land at Warrimoo, and it was desirous that at least one home should be established there as soon as possible. The homes will be small cottages of about two rooms, just large enough to house aged couples, or two friends who wish to spend the close of their lives together. Various business details In connection with the scheme were also discussed.
    An emergency committee, consisting of the three office-bearers, Mrs. Samuel, and Mrs. Champion, was elected, and Mrs. Membrey was appointed assistant hon. secretary.10
