• 26 Apr 1928: Mr. J. G. Hautot, who some time ago removed from Berwick to Beaconsfield, sustained a serious loss last week by a fire, which completely destroyed his furniture and the house in which he lived. The house was insured.⁷
• 17 May 1928: A FAMILY IN NEED. To the Editor. Sir, —At a public meeting in Beaconsfield on 26th ult., it was resolved that an effort be made to assist Mr. G. Hautot, dairy farmer, who recently lost all his earthly belongings in a disastrous fire which devoured his home, sparing nothing.
  This man served with the 8th Battalion A.I.F. throughout the severe fighting in the Somme district of France. He has a wife and five young children, and bears a high reputation as an honest man and a worker. We have opened a local subscription list, and, believing that Mr. Hautot has deserved well of his country, I now beg to respectfully ask that you will be kind enough to open a subscription list for him in the “Journal,” and give the matter what publicity you can.
  We have already arranged a small “kitchen tea” as a benefit to Mr. Hautot, but there are many necessary articles still to be obtained before the five young children can be snugly tucked up in bed at “Blanket Fair” time.

• 1 Jun 1928: A RETURNED SOLDIER'S MISFORTUNE. TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS. Sir,—Mr J G Hautot, who served in the 8th Battalion, AIF, has been renting a dairy farm in Beaconsfield and sending the milk to Melbourne. Until last Sunday he was receiving 7½ d. a gallon for his milk. Last mouth his home and all his belongings were destroyed by fire. The generosity of a neighbour saved him and his wife and five children from homelessness. An effort is being made here to assist him to re-habilitate himself but in a small community there is not much money. A public meeting has been held, and subscription lists have been opened. Hautot supplements his earnings as a dairy farmer by doing carpentering work when his war disability permits. His kit of tools has been destroyed and it is felt by his friends that he should be provided with a new kit together with a small sum to provide furniture for the family. To this end we wish to raise the sum of at least £20. Conditions in the dairying industry make it impossible for Hautot to re-equip himself.
