  • 15 Jun 1940: MOTORIST KILLED
THE driver of a meat truck, William Meader Reynolds, 54, of Kent Street, Ascot Vale, was killed in High Street, Kew, near the Hanna Street tram depot.
Reynolds had had a heart attack while in his truck and a doctor had sent for an ambulance. Apparently Reynolds recovered sufficiently to drive off.
A few minutes later, about a mile away, the truck, moving down-hill, crashed head-on into a Balwyn tram.
The tram driver, Alexander Wilson, 42, of Croydon Road, Bayswater, was admitted to St. Vincent's Hospital with possible fractures of the skull and one arms and other injuries. Three passengers were treated for cuts and abrasions.
Reynolds was a member of the firm of L. J. Reynolds and Co., wholesale butchers. Dick and Tom Reynolds, Essendon footballers, are his sons.
Nearly four hours elapsed before the wreckage was cleared.7
  • 9 Jul 1940: Car Driver's Seizure at Wheel
It appeared that dcceased had no idea of the dangerous state of his health, said the city coroner (Mr. Tingate, P.M.) at the conclusion of the inquest yesterday on William Meader Reynolds, 54 years, salesman, of Kent-street, Ascot Vale, who, on June 10, was fatally injured when a car he was driving in High-street, near O'Shaughnessy-street, Kew, collided with an electric tram. Apparently Reynolds had recovered from the first seizure and went on a little way and then had another seizure.
Evidence was given that as a result of the accident, deceased, who suffered from heart disease, received a number of bodily injuries.
A finding of accidental death was recorded.8
