  • 26 Aug 1916: PRESTON LADY'S WINDFALL, A MATTER OF £3000.
For nearly thirty years a block of land at Yarraville, within the municipality of Footscray, six acres in extent, has been without any known owner. It is a valuable block, with frontages to Hyde and Stephen streets, and the local council was looking forward to the time, now only two months hence, when, in the absence of a legal owner, it would be entitled to take possession of it. But now at the eleventh hour, Messrs W. B. and O. McCutcheon, solicitors, on behalf of Mrs. Kate Alexander, of Milton street, Preston, beneficiary under the will of James Coyne Riley, has laid claim to ownership, and interest is being taken in the race to prove ownership within the period of two months, before the land automatically becomes the property of the municipality. There were seven years' rates owing on the land before the council took possession, and another thirty years' rates have accrued, so that if the claim is established the council will stand to benefit to the extent of £1017 in outstanding rates.
The local council has decided that rather than put any obstacle in the way of the claimant, it will give her every reasonable assistance, and it has instructted its town clerk to that effect. It is established beyond doubt that Mrs. Alexander is the rightful heir. She was the only child of the original owner, James Coyne Riley, who died in 1856, just prior to his daughter's birth. The title deeds were discovered amongst the papers of a brother of the late Mr. Riley. After her husband's death Mrs. Riley removed to New Zealand, and thus trace was lost so long of the heirs to the property.
The property is valued at £3000 at the least.
Mrs. Alexander has been a resident of Preston for over 20 years. We join with others in hearty congratulations on her good fortune.4
