    Sir I read with interest Mr J. H. Bull's letter in Saturday a issue upon whaling and sealing in the Antarctic.
    It might be interesting to some of your readers to know that I took considerable interest in this matter when last in Scotland and inspected the whaling vessels in Dundee belonging to Messrs Stephen and Sons with the object of gaining information for the Victorian Government. I interviewed Sir Graham Berry in London who promised to forward to his Government the full particulars of our conversation the substance of which was that Messrs Stephen and Sons would send out to Melbourne two of their whaling steamers fully manned by their own crews, and give the use of them together with all produce, to the Victorian Government for two years at £5,000 per annum. The Victorian Government to pay wages, Messrs Stephen and Sons informed me were they certain the real black whale existed in the Antarctic regions they would send their vessels there at once. Messrs Stephen and Sons steamers sail for the Newfoundland sealing, about the 1st of February, and after they have left nothing can be done for this season. Their steamer the Terra Nova is by far the best steamer afloat for whaling purposes both as regards construction and power. There is nothing like her in America. Perhaps something might yet be done to try our waters for such a highly remunerative business. Whalebone is now worth more than £2,000 per ton.

  • 6 Dec 1907: BEGINNING OF GOLF IN AUSTRALIA
    To the editor of the Argus. Sir,—"A.N.'s" letter is certainly interesting, but I must say I never hears of Davie Robertson, although I knew Allan Robertson very intimately. He never mentioned having a brother attached to the garme. I have watched Allan Robertson many times ramming in the feathers of golf balls, and very nearly finishing them off. When the gutta-percha balls came in, the feathered ones flew out to return no more.
    Golfing in St. Andrews owes a large amount to my uncle (Sir Hugh Playfair) in preserving the care of the links while he was Provost of the old ancient city. It is so interesting to look back to the old days of golf, and see Captain Campbell, known better as Schallion. Mr Grant (of Kilgrastou), Major Cheyne, Wolfe Murray, Whyte Melville, and hosts of others enjoying the game and so often being couched by old Allan Robert son, who was certainly the champion golf player. He lies peacefully in the old cathedral grounds, and on his headstone are two golf clubs crossed. If "A.N." or Mr Balfour Melville would like to see some old books of photographs taken 50 or 60 years ago in St Andrews, I should be very pleased to show them.

  • 28 Jan 1914: HARKAWAY.
    On Saturday last the return tennis match with Dandenong was played on Mr G. O. Lyon's court at "Glenogil," Harkaway. The day was a very hot one, but notwithstanding this fact twelve players came to Berwick by the morning train and walked up by the old road, arriving in time to commence the match at 10.30 a.m. With the exception of a short interval for lunch at 12.30, the play continued without ceasing till 8 p.m., when the visitors had to leave in order to catch the evening train.
    Altogether 180 games were played and many closely contested sets proved to show the
    efficiency of the players on both sides, in spite of a temperature registering well over 100 degrees.
    The match consisted of 18 sets, the home team winning by 101 games to 61.
    The following were the players --HARKAWAY-Dr J. Morlet and Miss Smith, Mr Haines and Miss Traid, Mr W. Tetley and Miss Watson, Mr J. Mills and Miss Lyon, Mr C. Lyon and Miss Mills.
    DANDENONG -- Mr Watson and Miss Walker, Mr C. McLean and Miss Copp, Mr F. Parker and Miss N. Watson, Mr K. Paterson and Miss Paterson, Mr C. Sutherland and Miss Colin, Mr L. Paterson and Miss Sutherland.12
  • 11 Aug 1915: Mr G. O. Lyon sent to England by last mail the sum of L4 0s 6d. and is sending by this mail L27 9s. collected in one shilling subscrintions for the Tobacco Fund for our troops at Gallipoli. The collection is still open, and Mr Lyon will be pleased to receive further subscriptions. For every shilling subscribed each soldier gets a 48 packet, made good by the British Government, and a post-card is enclosed in each packet addressed to the donor, stamped and sent free. The greater proportion of the amount received by Mr Lyon was collected at the Farmers' Convention held at Wangaratta last month.13
  • 17 May 1917: From George O. Lyon, Harkaway, stating that about a dozen trees and some fencing on Berwick to Harkaway road required renewing, and asking for grant of £1 10/ to put same in order.—Left in hands of Cr Walsh and clerk of works.14
  • 15 Jun 1917: Mrs Ranken, daughter of Mr and Mrs G. O. Lyon, who has been staying at "Glenogil" for some time has returned to her home in New South Wales.
    Cr a'Reckett and Mr. G. O. Lyon have arranged to make some repairs to the tree guards on the Harkaway to Berwick road.15
  • 8 Mar 1918: Mr G. O. Lyon, of Harkaway, having sold his property, will probably leave the district shortly. During his residence in the district, extending over many years, he has taken a leading interest in public matters. He is a member of the committee of the Mornington Farmers' Society, and occupied the post of vice-president in 1916.16
  • 15 Mar 1918: Berwick. Next Saturday, at the Harkaway Hall, a farewell social is to be tendered to Mr and Mrs G. O. Lyon and Pte. Glover. A presentation of an illuminated address will also be made to Mr Lyon. Kate Hill, Robert Francis Deane Glover17
  • 26 Sep 1922: Deep regret will be felt by a large circle of friends at the death of Mr. George Lyon of Glenogil, Harkaway which occurred rather suddenly at his residence on Sunday, September 17. Born at St Andrew's, Scotland in 1844 he was the son of the Rev. Charles Jobson Lyon, rector of St. Andrew's. He came to Australia in 1863 to join his brother, Mr. Charles Lyon of Ballanee. He took cattle to Queensland to stock country, known first as Fairlie Plains, later and now as Beechal. In April 1876 Mr. Lyon married Miss Kate Hill, daughter of Thomas Hill, of Merrylee, Glasgow. Their family consisted of four daughters and one son, Lieut. Charles Hill Lyon, who went to Gallipoli with the 8th Light Horse and fell during the advance on Jerusalem, November 1917. His widow and three daughters survive him.18

  • 8 Sep 1927: Police Superintendent Hehir, V.B., of Benalla, and formerly of Dandenong, retired last month after 38 years of service. He was entertained by the public of Benalla at a smoke social on Thursday evening, 25th ult., when residents from all parts of the North Eastern and Goulburn Valley district, also from Melbourne, were present. Cr. Heaney, president of the Benalla Shire Council, was chairman. The toast of the guest was proposed by Inspector Nolan, of Shepparton, who paid a very high tribute to Super-intendent Hehir. Ever since the guest had joined the force as a mounted constable he had been a most efficient officer, and had always been courteous, honorable, fair and impartial.
    Superintendent Hehir had won the coveted Badge of Valor, and had also gained the warm esteem and regard of his colleagues and the public. He was “a gentleman and a man,” and every one wished him health, happiness and prosperity in his retirement. Inspector Nolan’s remarks were endorsed by the Chairman and several other speakers, and the toast was enthusiastically honored. Mr. E..F. Cleary, M.L.A. for Benalla, on behalf of residents, presented the guest with a set of cut-glass decanters in oak frame, also an oak tray with glasses. Superintendent Hehir suitably acknowledged the remarks and presentation.6

    FOLLOWING a stroke several weeks ago, Mrs. Irene Mary Carroll, wife of Mr. Thomas P. Carroll, J.P., of “Balrath,” 2 Macpherson St., well-known Dandenong auctioneer, passed away peacefully at the Dandenong and District Hospital last Sunday evening.
    Seldom, if ever, has anybody been so deeply and universally mourned. The whole district felt a deep sense of personal loss, for the late Mrs. Carroll was a fine woman and one who was liked by everyone who knew her. Before her marriage she was a Miss Hehir, daughter of that well-known and greatly esteemed ex-Sergeant of Police, Mr. James Hehir, who was stationed in this district for so many years. She was married to Mr. Tom Carroll just 26 years ago and spent the greater part of her life in this district. Her quiet, ways, kindly and unassuming manner and her ever readiness to do a good turn or lend a helping hand, endeared her to all. She was a wonderful mother to her family; a real home-lover, and a loyal help-mate to her husband. His, and their grief, is shared, not only by Dandenong friends, but by friends right throughout Gippsland.
    The late Mrs. Carroll was born at Cobram and was only 51 when the call came. Her father is still a highly esteemed resident of Dandenong and shares the sorrow of her husband and family of two daughters, Mary and Shelagh, and one son, Brian. They have the consolation of knowing that their mother passed on fully fortified by the rites of the Church. She was a devout Catholic and was always ready to help in church-work at St. Mary’s where she worshipped for so many years.
    When she was first stricken down over a month ago it was realised that her illness was a grave one, but when a slight improvement occurred in recent weeks, it was hoped that she would pull through. In the past week, however, her condition became steadily worse and the end came on Sunday evening. And so passed a very dear and very sincere lady.
    Despite the short notice, St. Mary's was crowded for the Requiem Mass which was celebrated by Rev. Fr. O’Sullivan at 9.30 on Monday morning. Before the cortege left the church for the Berwick Cemetery in the afternoon, Rev. Fr. Pooley offered up prayers for the repose of deceased’s soul and also officiated at the grave side. The funeral, although a private one, was largely attended and a special floral car had to be requisitioned to carry the wealth of floral tributes which were received from friends near and far. Fay’s Flowers, at Dandenong, had to obtain the assistance of another florist to cope with the orders.
    It was but one symbol of the love and esteem in which deceased was held. Mrs. Carroll went to school at Berwick for seven years and it was her wish that she should be buried there. The pallbearers were Cr. M. Bourke, Cr. C. Greaves, Messrs. J. J. Ahern, Stewart Scott, J. West, K. McLennan, F. Richardson, J. Reilly, J. Sweeney, S. W. Hamilton, S. W. Hehir and J. Hehir. W. J. Garnar and Son carried out the funeral arrangements.
    COURT’S TRIBUTE
    As Mr. T. Carroll is a Justice of the Peace and a member of the Dandenong Bench, the P.M. (Mr. D. T. Wilkins) on Monday adjourned the court for two minutes as a mark of respect and sympathy on Monday.
    COUNCIL’S CONDOLENCE
    At the Dandenong Council meeting on Monday Cr. Ericksen, the Shire President, said that it was with deep sympathy that councillors had learned of Mrs. Carroll’s death. She was the wife of an ex-councillor and an esteemed ratepayer of the shire and he knew all ratepayers received the news of her passing with profound regret. She was well-known for her philanthropic and gentle ways. He moved that a letter of sympathy be sent to Mr. Carroll and family from the council.
    Seconding the motion Cr. Williams said that Mrs. Carroll had been one of the finest women in the district. Hers had been a beautiful life and she was the type of woman they could ill afford to lose. She always had a kindly word and a smile for every body and they all felt her passing very keenly.
    Councillors stood for a minute in silent tribute to Mrs. Carroll’s memory.6

    BERWICK, Sunday. — Frederick Gardiner, 18 years, son of Mr. A. C. Gardiner, builder, met his death under tragic circumstances yesterday afternoon. While riding a young horse he was thrown, and his foot being caught in the stirrup, he was dragged for some distance and badly kicked about the head. He died without recovering consciousness.8

    bour, of the Church of Christ, conducted an impressive service, and Mr. John Grant conducted the funeral arrangements. Great sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents in their great and sudden loss. Deceased was a nephew of Mr. E. E. Gardiner.9

Some years ago the eldest son Fred, was accidently killed by being thrown from a horse. Mrs. Lyon and her children were buried in the Berwick Cemetery, on Monday last.8
  • 11 May 1939: SMASH INQUEST TOMORROW
    Six deaths in the passenger bus-sand truck collision in Warrigal Road, Oakleigh, on March 17, will be investigated at the morgue tomorrow by the City Coroner (Mr Tingate).
    Fourteen witnesses have been summoned to attend, but many will give only formal evidence. The brief of evidence includes statements made to the police by the driver of the bus, Ernest Jenkinson, of Monash Street, Box Hill, and the driver of the motor truck, Alfred Whitworth, of Albany Crescent, Surrey Hills.
    There were no independent witnesses of the collision. One side was torn out of the bus, and Mrs Marjorie Lyon, of Johnston Street, Mentone, and her two infant daughters, Mrs Helena Dowling, and Kathleen Dowling, 8, of Barker Road. Heatherton; and Mrs Adeline George, of McIndoe Parade, Parkdale, were killed.
    Another of Mrs Dowling's young daughters, Mrs Mary Devine, of Grattan Street, Carlton, and Jenkinson were injured.9
  • 21 Jul 1939: DRIVER NOT GUILTY IN BUS CRASH CASE
    A verdict of not guilty was returned by the jury, after a retirement of 71 minutes, in the Oakleigh bus crash case in General Sessions today.
    Alfred Whitworth, of Albany Crescent, Surrey Hills, had been charged with the manslaughter of six passengers of a bus with which the truck he was driving came into collision in Warragul Road, Oakleigh on March 17.
    Those killed were:—
    Mrs Helena Howling, 39, of Bakers Road, Heatherton; Kathleen Howling, 3, her daughter;
    Mrs Adeline George, 63, of Mclndoe Street, Mordialloc; Mrs Marjorie Lyon 25, of Johnston Street, Mentone and her two daughters, Ruth Elizabeth Lyon, 4, and Dawn Rosalie Lyon, 4 months.
    The trial began three days ago.
    SUMMING UP
    "One man's whole family in the crash was blotted out in an instant." said Judge Foster in his summing up. "The accident it is acknowledged, was appalling, but you must not let your feelings or sentiment disturb your judgment. Among other things, it must be decided whether the bus driver hugged the centre of the road, or whether Whitworth did."
    Mr Eugene Gorman K C., and Mr A. L. Read (Instructed by Mallison, Stewart, Stawell and Nankivell) appeared for Whitworth. The Crown Prosecutor was Mr R. M Nolan.10

  • 27 Feb 1913: A Motor Accident.
    In the County Court at Melbourne, before Judge Box, on Thursday last, the case of James Sheriff against Dr Norman McArthur, of Collins street, Melbourne and Wiseman and Barrett, of a'Beckett street, Melbourne, motor car manufacturers, came on for hearing. Plaintiff a well known carrier carrying on business at Berwick, and, on the day after Melbourne Cup Day last year, his van was run into by a motor car. The accident happened on the road between Dandenong and Berwick. The car was driven by a man from Wiseman and Barrett's, who had been sent up to Steele's hotel to take the car to Melbourne for repairs. Dr McArthur had left it at Steele's some time before. The difficulty in the car arose from the fact that although the car belonged to Dr McArthur there was doubt as to the driver. Was he the servant of the garage or of the owner?
    After hearing evidence from James Sheriff and his son, Mr A. Sheriff, and Mr Collings on behalf of the plaintiff and from Dr McArthur on behalf of the defendants, Judge Box held that the defendants Wiseman and Barrett were liable to pay to Sheriff £18 damages and costs and Sheriff was liable to pay Dr McArthur's costs; but Wiseman and Barrett must also reimburse Sheriff any costs he had to pay on account of McArthur's costs. The case was somewhat unusual by reason of this order, which effect gives the plaintiff Sheriff damages and costs against the defendants Wiseman and Barrett. Mr W. H. Magenna (instructed by Mr Jeffery Macpherson) appeared for Sheriff, Mr Wanliss for McArthur and Dr O'Hara Wood for Wiseman and Barrett, both instructed by Messrs Woolcott and Drysdale.     Mr. Herman Immanuel Wanke, who passed away at Berwick Bush Nursing Hospital last Thursday after only a very brief illness was a grandson of one of the earliest settlers in the Harkaway area, who took up his property more than 120 yeas ago.
    Herman Wanke, who was the son of the late Mr and Mrs Immanuel Wanke, was born in 1883 and spent the whole of his life in the district.
    His grandfather, Ernt Gottlob Wanke, was a medical student who required only one year to complete his degree. He arrived as a ship's surgeon in Melbourne, but in 1851 deserted for the Castlemaine gold fields.
    There he missed a fortune by a few inches, for it was later discovered that his fireplace was over one of the richest spots on the field.
    He returned to Melbourne and took on hairdressing before purchasing land at the Government sale in 1853.
    That property, "Hillcroft," remained in the Wanke family until about 20 years ago, when Mr Herman Wanke sold it and came to reside in Berwick.
    Dr Ernt Gobblob Wanke, with his medical knowledge, was a wonderful help to the pioneer settlers and their families at a time when medical aid was very hard to obtain in the young Colony.
    His son, Immanuel, and later his grandson, Herman, carried on the family property with very considerable success.
    There was a strong Lutheran community at Harkaway in the early days and in the absence of the Pastor at times the Church service was taken by Dr Wanke, with Immanuel acting as organist.
    HARKAWAY CEMETERY
    In the early days there was no Cemetery at Harkaway, but one was established aboui. 1860.
    The secretary was Immanuel Wanke, and on his death that position was taken over by his son, Herman.
    Connected with the Lutheran Church was a School, with Jacob Hessell as the teacher. The building which served as a school during the week became the Lutheran Church on Sundays.
    About 1896 a bell tower and bell were erected to serve both the Church and the School. The bell was christened "Concordia." By 1935 the old bell tower was shakey so it was replaced with a new one. It was given a further lease of life a few years ago.
    Herman Wanke carried on the family tradition of seeing that "Concordia" rang out the old and rang in the new year without fail.
    He would pull his gold watch — a family possession handed down from generation to generation — from his pocket as he had done for so many years and tick off the last few seconds of the passing year, before he rang out the chimes. Despite advancing years Mr Wanke continued this practice right up to New Year's Day in 1974, just as he retained his association with the old cemetery.
    SENIOR CITIZENS
    Over the last few years one of his chief interests has been the Berwick Senior Citizens' Club, from which he derived a tremendous amount of enjoyment.
    He was pre-deceased about twelve years ago by his wife, formerly Freda Amelia Wessell, of Prahran, whom he married in 1920, but he is survived by five daughters — Beryl (Mrs Exell) Pauline (Mrs Watt), Gwen (Mrs Aumann), Shirley (Mrs Threadgoid) and Meryl (Mrs Poxon) — and two sons — Alan and Bob.
    Many throughout the district have been saddened by the passing of this grand old man.
    The funeral, which was largely attended, took place at Harkaway Cemetery on Monday, following a service at Garnar's funeral
    chapel. The services were conducted by Rev. T. Waters.8
