    BERWICK DISTRICT lost another one of its grand old residents last Sunday with the passing in a city private hospital of Mr. Hugh Claude Pennefather, of “Ardsley”, Clyde Rd., Berwick. Deceased, who had reached the grand age of 87, was a retired sheep expert, whose name stood high in the grazing and sheep-breeding world. Mr. Pennefather’s wife, Mabel Annie Rose Pennefather (nee Irving) pre-deceased him in April, 1949. He was a native of Brighton.
    The funeral, which was a private one, took place yesterday, leaving W. J. Garnar and Son’s Parlor at Dandenong, for the Spring Vale Crematorium, where the Reiv. W. P. Daunt conducted the service.
    Berwick and district friends sympathise with Hugh, Wilfred, Harold, Geoffrey, Eveline and Mabel in the loss of a devoted father.12

  • 1 Aug 1892: HORSE STEALING AND ROBBERY AT BERWICK. A SMART CAPTURE. BERWICK, Friday
    On Friday morning, July 22, Mr. John Taylor, builder, of Berwick, reported to Constable Roberts, of Berwick, that a saddle horse had been stolen from his yard during the previous night. On the following Monday another report was made to the constable that a large, empty trunk, which had been broken open, was found under a hedge about 100 yards from the township boundary. Inquiries were made, and it was found that the trunk had been stolen from the storeroom of the Border Hotel, Berwick, where it had been stored by Dr. S H. Seccombe, late of Berwick, but who had recently removed to Ivanhoe, New South Wales. The contents of the trunk had consisted of silver plated ware, cutlery, table and bed linen, and several curiosities and other articles valued at between £10 and £50. Constable Roberts at once concluded that the two robberies were committed on the same night, anti that the horse had been stolen for the purpose of removing the goods a conclusion which subsequent events proved to be correct. No trace of the robber could be found, however, until Wednesday, when the constable received word that the horse had been found in a paddock on the road to Gembrook, and later on a bag containing some articles was found planted in a gully near the same place. Constable Robert's suspicious were at once aroused.
    Remembering that a labourer named Douglas, living m a hut in the Gembrook Ranges, about 18 miles from Berwick, had called at the police station the night the horse was stolen for the ostensible purpose of taking out a summons, he concluded that Douglas was the person wanted. On Thursday last, Roberts, attired as a settler, paid a visit to the ranges, and from information received in regard to Douglas's movements felt assured that he was on the right track.
    Returning to Berwick the constable obtained a search warrant. He started for Gembrook yesterday morning, and arrived at Douglas's hut about 10 a m A search of the hut revealed a large quantity of the stolen goods buried in a box under the floor, with about 2ft. of earth on the top of it. Other articles were found concealed about the bed. As Douglas was not at home, the next step was to secure his arrest and this proved no easy matter, as the country is. very broken and the scrub dense. At 9 pm, however, Roberts surprised his man in the tent of another labourer some distance from the hut.
    As the night was very dark and the roads bad, the constable was compelled to stay in the ranges all night, and keep guard over his prisoner until daylight this morning. Having procured a horse and trap, Constable Roberts conveyed the prisoner and his booty to the Berwick lockup today. During the afternoon the prisoner made a written confession of having stolen the horse and goods. The prisoner will be brought before the police court on Monday, when a remand will be applied for by the police6
