  • 15 May 1922: AN INFLUENCE FOR GOOD. LATE PROFESSOR A MAN OF HIGH ATTAINMENTS
The late Professor Henry Laurie, who occupied the Chair of Philosophy of the University of Melbourne until 1911, was a man of lofty character and high attainments. An excellent teacher, he was always ready to give his pupils a helping hand, constantly impressing them with his openness of mind and his judicial firmness.
From his student days he was always interested in poetry, and was among Browning's most devoted admirers. He was twice president of the Professorial Board, and as a professor was a helpful and trustful colleague. Personally quiet, unassuming, and dignified, he had an influence for the good both, of the University and the community.7
  • 20 May 1922: Dr. Henry Laurie, who died on Sunday at the age of 85 years had a long and useful career, first as a journalist and next as a Melbourne University profesor. Without for the moment making an invidious comparison between the country journalism of to-day and of days gone by, we may venture to assert that the provincial press of the 'seventies and 'eighties was fortunate in possessing writers of the intellectual calibre of Henry Nicholls of the "Ballarat Star" and Henry Laurie of the "Warrnambool Standard," when Victorian politics were exciting. Both gentlemen afterwards, though at different periods, became regular contributors in "leader" type to "The Australasian" Mr. Nicholls, after he had transferred to the "Hobart Mercury," and Dr. Laurie, when professor of Logic and Philosophy. It says something for Mr. Nicholls, as a forcible and experienced writer, that he should have been invited to supply a weekly leading article from a centre so remote by post as Hobart then was from Melbourne. Each in his turn kept up his connection with "The Australasian" so long as he could spare the time for journalistic service outside his ordinary, work. Dr. Laurie was distinguished as a writer and teacher by tolerance and open-mindedness.
He gave equal attention to the pros and cons of the questions that came before him, and was fair, moderate, and effective in the expression of his own views. As professor of mental and moral philosophy, he had to study subjects which are ordinarily regarded as unattractive, and the works of thinkers like Kant, Spinosa, and Bergson, or a poem like "Sordello," provided him with agreeable refreshment. As an exponent of "hard reading," he was clear, simple and easy to follow, and as a teacher considerate, with a temper that was always equable. And he has a "saving sense of humour."8
