  • 20 Nov 1894: JOHNSON V. JOHNSON AND BNGREY.
Samuel Johnson petitioned for a divorce from his wife, Grace Theresa Johnson, on the ground of her adultery with George Allan Bengrey, a clerk. The parties were married at Dunedin, New Zealand, in June, 1881. The acquaintance between the respondent and co-respondent begun as early as 1885, and since then they had been frequently together. He did not suspect any thing improper between them until the end of 1893, although on previous occasions he had warned the co-respoudont to cease visiting his wife. He came home suddenly one day at the end of 1893 and found Bengrey leaving his house. He gave him a thrashing on that occasion. In June of this year the petitioner, his brother and another friend kept watch on the house. They saw the respondent and co-respondent enter. Shortly afterwards the three witnesses made an entry and found Mrs. Johnson and Bengrey in bed together. The petitioner gave the co-respondent a thrashing and kicked him out of the house without allowing him to dress. Since then petitioner had been allowing his wife 30s. a week. Mr. Woolf, instructed by Mr. W. H. Croker, appeared for the petitioner. A decree nisi was granted, with costs against the co-respondent.6
