  • 13 May 1899: Playing with a Snake. — Gladstone road, Dandenong, 3rd May. — Dear Aunt Connie, — This is the second time I have written to you. I am returning the collecting card, with the amount of L1 1s 4d. I am sorry that I have kept it so long; I had to go a long way for the money, and I hope it will do some good for the little sufferers. We are milking nine cows altogether. My brothers and myself milk them. We live about four miles from Dandenong. It is very nice where we live. The creek is about 150 yards, away from our house. There are plenty of shrubs and maidenhair growing by the water; and there are black fish, eels, and trout! We often go fishing, and sometimes we tumble in. There are plenty of snakes about our place. One day my sister was playing with a shake. She did not know what it was, and she told mother to come and have a look at the long black frog, and mother got a terrible fright when she saw it. I must now conclude with best love to Cousins Connie and Florrie, Uncle Ben, I and yourself. I remain your affectionate niece,— Emma Weist.
( P.S.— May I become an Associate; I am over sixteen now.)
[Yes, dear. We shall he pleased to have you as an Associate. What you have sent will certainly do good.— Aunt Connie.]5
  • 26 May 1900: At the Waxworks.— Gladstone road, Dandenong. May 4, 1900. — My Dear Aunt Connie, — We are having a lot of rain for this time of the year. My brother and myself went to Melbourne last week. We enjoyed our trip. We went into the Waxworks. It looks awful where the criminals are. I have not got my Cot certificate yet. It had been sent to me, but I did not get it, as the address was wrong. It was sent to me again. I did not get it the last time. I am waiting anxiously for it. Is it not terrible for the people up at Gippsland to be flooded out of their homes? My brother, Hermann, has been very ill with inflammation of the lungs. He is better again. I must now conclude, with best wishes to Cousins Connie aud Florrie, Uncle Ben, and not forgetting yourself. I remain, your affectionate niece associate, Emma Weist.
[I am sorry the certificate has not reached you again. You had better write to the secretary of the Children's Hospital, Carlton, to whom I forwarded the certificates, to be signed and posted,— Aunt Connie.]6

Dandenong, June 6. Dear Aunt Connie,—It is a long time since I wrote last. I have five brothers and one sister. Their names are Henry, Alf., Herman, Albert, Fred and Emma. We have four horses. I have two ring-tails. My father has an oil engine, and he uses it for irrigation in the summer for the vegetable garden. Nearly all the people about here are market gardeners. We have beenhaving very wet weather lately. Our house is about five hundred yards ... There are not very many ... My favorite songs are: ".... lows Homeward Fly" and "... Wheel." I am twelve years ... still in the fifth class. I remain your loving niece. MINNIE5
  • 24 Jun 1905: INDIAN RUNNER DUCKS
Dandenong, June 6th.— Dear Aunt Connie,—We have been having bad weather lately, but it is beautiful to-day. We are milking nine cows at present. They are not giving much milk now. The fairy tales writen by "Philomel" are splendid. I am always looking forward to them. My sister has some Indian Runner ducks. It is very amusing to watch them running about. One would think they were playing a game among themselves. I left school six months ago. Since I last wrote to you we had a Sunday school, and there were twenty attending. We got our prizes in April. My favorite flowers are roses, daphne, and violets. My two pet ringtail opossums are gone. - They were so tame that I used to let them out of the cage at night, and one night they disappeared. With kind regards to Connie and Florrie and yourself. — I remain, your affectionate niece, MINNIE WEIST, age 13 years 4 months.6
  • 28 Sep 1907: A NUMBER OF PETS.
Gladstone road, Dandenong, 12th September. — Dear Aunt Connie, — The weather has been very cold, but the spring will soon be with us again. We are milking eight cows, and feeding two little calves. We have a lot of pets, fourteen pigeons, three bronzewinged pigeons, three quail, one goldfinch, six wax bills, one rosella parrot, two pups, and a kitten. The wattle blossom has just finished blooming. The maiden hair fern is lovely along the banks of the creek. My father has been taking "The Weekly Times" for a long time. I enjoy reading the Young Folks' page very much. The flower gardens are beginning to look green. Our boronia is out lovely; it is nearly six feet high. My sister has a post-card album, with fifty-six postcards in it, and mine contains seventy. We are going to the "Australian Exhibition of Women's Work." With love to Connie and Florrie, Uncle Ben and yourself. I remain, your loving niece, MINNIE WEIST.
    P.S.— My age is 15 years.7
  • 31 Oct 1908: A PRETTY GARDEN.
Gladstone road, Dandenong. — Dear Aunt Connie,—It is such a long time since I wrote to you. I will now take the pleasure of doing so again. The weather has been very warm lately, but I think it will soon rain. The grass is beginning to grow everywhere. We are milking eleven cows at present, and they are giving a fair quantity of milk. All my brothers and sister went to see the Fleet. I went on the Friday. I think the battle ships looked lovely. We went on the Ozone, which took us out from half-past eleven till one o'clock, giving us a good view of every one. My brothers are planting tomatoes today. When finished, we will have about seven acres. There are a splendid lot of flowers out in our garden, such as boronia, stocks, wallflowers, forget-me-nots, marguerites, and many others. My sister and I each have a bicycle. They are very handy when we want anything from Dandenong, as we live four miles from the township.—With love to Cousins Connie and Florrie, Uncle Ben, and not forgetting yourself. I remain, your loving niece. MINNIE WEST. P.S.— My age is sixteen years.8

A serious conflagration happened on Friday afternoon last, causing the total destruction of a five-roomed weatherboard cottage and all the furniture and contents, not a stick of anything being saved. The house was the property of Mr. Gilbert Irvine, and situated at Mount Martha, and at the time of the fire was occupied by his son, James Irvine, and his wife, who had driven into Mornington; and locked up the house and left everything safe. However, a small fire had been left, and it is supposed that a spark, must have flew out and set the place on fire. The house and furniture were covered by insurance. James Irvine10
