A serious conflagration happened on Friday afternoon last, causing the total destruction of a five-roomed weatherboard cottage and all the furniture and contents, not a stick of anything being saved. The house was the property of Mr. Gilbert Irvine, and situated at Mount Martha, and at the time of the fire was occupied by his son, James Irvine, and his wife, who had driven into Mornington; and locked up the house and left everything safe. However, a small fire had been left, and it is supposed that a spark, must have flew out and set the place on fire. The house and furniture were covered by insurance. James Irvine9
