I went to deceased room about 7 o'clock this morning + found he was dead the body was warm and he had apparently been dead about two hours. He was leaning over the side of the bed and had evidently expired in that possession

  • 22 Feb 1926: MATCHES ABANDONED. CRICKETERS FIGHT FIRE
    Damage at Harkaway. BERWICK. Sunday—At 11 o'clock on Saturday morning extensive fires broke out in the valley at the rear of Mr. J. Edmondson's property at Harkaway, two miles from Berwick. Travelling down the valley into Dean's old property, the flames burned right up to the back of the house. By good work on the part of the beaters the house was saved. The fire then crossed into Dr. S. B. Sewell's, but did not damage the house, although the front and rear portions of the property were burnt, the fire being put out in time. While the fighters were busy at Dean's word was received that one mile farther down the valley Miss Lyon's timber paddock was on fire. Here a most spectacular sight was witnessed, as the flames tore through the undergrowth, which had not been burned for years. At Nurse Traill's a "save" was effected. The flames which burned to within a few feet of the house, were extinguished just in time. Mr A. Baker's property was also endangered, but escaped damage, and the two fires joined together in the valley near Edmondson's. All cricket matches throughout the district were abandoned and the players joined the bands of fire-fighters. With their assistance and that of a large body of men from Dandenong, the danger and the extent of the fires were minimised.12

  • 26 Nov 1915: On Wednesday John O'Shea, farmer, of Nuable Creek, aged 54 years, died suddenly from rheumatism. Deceased had been suffering from this complaint for many years, and is is thought that it suddenly attacked the heart. The Rev. Father Ronayne performed the last sad rites at the graveside yesterday. Mr. H. Logan had charge of the funeral arrangements.7
