  • 28 Jan 1932: BERWICK. Mrs. Jones, wife of Mr. Joshua Jones, of Berwick, died on Monday night, January 18. The deceased lady had been in ill health for some-time.
    The funeral took palce at the Berwick cemetery on Wednesday, and was conducted by the Rev. C. Jones (Presbyterian). In addition to the bereaved husband, there is one son (Mr. D. A. Jones, Somerville), and two daughters (Mrs. Colls, Neerim), and Mrs. R. K. McLennan, Dandenong), to mourn their loss.20

    At the St Kilda Court on Friday, Miss Alice Mooney, of the Royal Hotel, Esplanade; Francis O Connor, Albion Hotel, Inkerman street, and George Emery, Alma Hotel, Chapel street were proceeded against by Mr Waters, excise officer, for not obliterating the duty stamps on beer casks opened by them. Mrs Mooney and Mr Emery, for having two casks with stamps not obliterated, were fined 20s. each ; Mr O'Connor, having only one cask, was fined 10s. The costs in each case were 10s. 6d.6

  • 31 Jan 1920: MR. JOHN BUCKLEY.
    One of the oldest pioneers of the Mornington Peninsula passed away on Wednesday week in the person of Mr John Buckley, of "Erinslea," Balnarring.
    The deceased was born in Tipperary, Ireland, 82 years ago, and came to Victoria in the year 1856, settling in Balnarring. A few years after he married a daughter of the late John Dore, "Mt. Ararat,'' Pakenham.
    Deceased took an active part in all matters relating to the Church. Mass used to be celebrated for a number of years in the deceased's house till St. John's Church yas erected. The parish, which was then worked from Brighton, was in charge of Rev. Fr. (now Dean) Carey, and later from Dandenong, in charge of Rev. Fr. Quilter. Deceased took an active part in all public matters. He was a member of the first Roads Board and, of largely attended, the cortege being a mile long. A widow, six sons, and five daughters are left to mourn their loss. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. C.P. Frilay.12
