  • 6 Nov 1920: ALCOHOL IN DRUG. FIRM HEAVILY FINED.
Cnscs of a somewhat unusual nature came before Mr. Cherry, P.M., in the Summons Court on Thursday, when Maurice Henry Pirrie. trading as M. H. Pirrie and Co., was proceeded against on three complaints of Health Inspector Cato that he sold a drug, "Dr. Ricord's Essence of Life," which was not packed and labelled in conformity, with the Health Acts, in that its label failed to indicate that tbe drug contained alcohol, and also omitted to state the name and address of the vendor.
Mr. O 'Sullivan entered a plea of guilty for the defendant, and asked that a small penalty be inflicted. Mr. E. J. D. Stanley (for the Crown) pointed out that the analyst's certificate showed that the drug contained 54.5 per cent of proof spirit, and stated that it was important that such a high proportion of alcohol should be declared in the label.
The police magistrate said that he must take a serious view of the cases, and inflicted fines totalling £30, and ordered defendant to pay 10s 6d court costs.6
