To-day at Beaconsfield two old colonists, both of whom have passed the span of three score years and ten, will celebrate their diamond wedding. Mr. Weston was born in London in 1854. As an infant he was brought to Hobart in 1856, and in 1871 he arrived in Victoria. Mrs. Weston, who before her marriage was Miss Mary Ann Welch, was born in Somerset in 1856, and arrived with her parents in Melbourne in 1858. THE UNIVERSAL esteem in which Mr. Jim Parkes, of Beaconsfield, and his bride, Miss E. Mulhallen, are held, was shown by the large attendance at a pre-wedding social tendered them in the Beaconsfield hall on Tuesday, December 1st. Friends from near and far attended to wish them well on the matrimonial sea. James Norman Parkes6
  • 16 Dec 1953: Pretty Nhill Bride In White Silk Tulle
LOOKING RADIANT in a lovely frock of white silk tulle Miss Eileen Eleanor Mulhallen, of Nhill, made a lovely bride as she entered St. Michael’s Church, Berwick, on Saturday, December 5th, for her marriage to the genial and popular secretary of the Beaconsfield Football Club, Mr. James Norman (Jim) Parkes.
It was one of the biggest and prettiest weddings Berwick has seen for some timie and the large gathering of friends and well-wishers at the church reflected the great popularity of the young couple. St. Michael’s looked lovely in its floral garb of Russell lupins, gladioli and lupins.
The bride is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Mulhallen, of 142 Nelson St., Nhill, and the groom, the twin son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Parkes, of Railway Av., Beaconsfield. Rev. Fr. Hardy was the celebrant.
Given away by her father, the petite bride looked lovely as she walked up the aisle on his arm. Her frock of white silk tulle was made with a full skirt topped with a jacket of dainty guipure lace, featuring a Mary Stuart neckline and long sleeves. Tiny pearl buttons fastened the jacket from neck to waist. A juliet cap of brocaded satin held in place the finger-tip veil. With a prayer book, loaned by her sister, Mrs. L. Brown, of 1 Esk Court, Dandenong, the bride carried a trailer of gardenias.
Looking very dainty in shell pink, the bride’s close friend, Mrs. Shirley Long, was matron of honor. The full skirt of her frock was banded with lace and had a matching lace collar. It was fastened at the waist with pink pearl buttons. A heart shaped bonnet of pink tullle, trimmed with pleated tinsel tulle, framed her face and she wore pink mittens. Pink and mauve were the predominant shades in the trailer of gladioli, carnations and frangipanni, which she carried.
The ’groom had his twin brother, Thomas, as best man.
The ceremony was performed to a background of incidental organ music.
After the ceremony, a reception was held at the Beaconsfield Hall, where the happy newly weds were assisted in receiving the guests by Mr. and Mrs. Mulhallen and Mr. and Mrs. Parkes. Mrs. Mulhallen favored a becoming pale blue ensemble, with black accessories, and pinned on a spray of frangipanni and buttercup roses. Mrs. Parkes wore an attractive dusty pink frock underneath her smart junior navy coat, teamed with black accessories. Fragrant, dark red roses and frangipanni comprised her spray.
Tastefully decorated by friends of the young couple, the hall looked lovely as 60 guests sat down to the breakfast tables.
Cr. Claud Harris, who presided in toasting the newlyweds, and wishing the young couple every happiness, said that Mr. Jim Parkes was one of the best citizens Beaconsfield had ever turned out, and if he proved as good a husband then he and his fair bride should be happy indeed. The usual toasts were honored and a large sheaf of congratulatory messages read out.
When the newlyweds left on their honeymoon, which was spent touring the Gippsland Alps, and Lakes Entrance, the bride travelled in a fetching pink faille suit, allied with black accessiories.
Mr. and Mrs. Parkes will be residing in Beaconsfield. James Norman Parkes7

THREE SONS of Mr. and Mrs. F. Parkes, of Railway avenue, Beaconsfield, are serving in the Army. Tom Parkes, whose twin brother, Jim, is a butcher, in the A.M.F., stationed in Victoria, has only been in the army 16 months but has already secured his sergeant’s stripes and is now an instructor in one of the biggest mechanised schools in Victoria, the M.V.T.T.C. An elder brother, Demps, has been serving in the Middle East for the past 12 months. All three boys were born and bred at Beaconsfield where the family is well known.5
