  • 10 May 1919: OBITUARY. Mrs. Porritt.
At a meeting of the Port Melbourne Ladies' Benevolent Society on Wednesday week members expressed in a resolution, their sorrow at the loss of their late co-worker, Mrs. Porritt.
The news of the sad and sudden death ol Mrs. Porritt, which took place at her residence, "Avonside", Balwyn-road, Balwyn. came as a great shock to the many residents of Port who knew her.
At the time of her death, Mrs. Porritt was only 55 years of age. In the prime of life, she was a very active worker at Friendly Society and other avenues. Her life was a noble one. She made many sacrifices in order that she might assist others. Her work is well known in charitable and patriotic circles, as well as Friendly Societies. Only the evening prior to her death she presided at a meeting of the Surrey Hills A.W.A. Her iife was a labour of love, and many people, both young and old, will greatly mourn her loss. She was born at Carlton. Shortly after her marriage she took up residence at Port Melbourne, and for a period of over 25 years she was a true Port Melbourne citizen, doing her utmost to assist every deserving cause. For quite a number of years she was an active member of the local Ladies' Benevolent Society, and at times occupied the presidential chair.
In this work she always had a kindly, helping and sympathetic manner in assisting the poor and needy. Again, she was a member of the committee for the boarded out children and saw to it that they were properly and well cared for. In hospital work she was ever ready to assist, and her labours in this respect were recognised by her election to a life governorship of at least three of our Melbourne hospitals. In Friendly Society work she had a special interest. The Druids' Ladies' Lodge, ''Duchess of York," first claimed her intention. Afterwards she was connected with the Foresters, being one of the foundation members of Court Princess May. Subsequently she was devoted to the A.W.A.. and with this association she was widely known throughout the State. She occupied the position of president of several branches, and at the time of her death was vice-president of the board of directors, as well as a prominent member and delegate at the annual conferences of the association. Even in sporting circles her name figured. She was vice-president of the Albert Park Ladies' Rowing Club. Many other associations, too, have need to thank Mrs. Porritt for her splendid work, because she was such a good and keen business woman. She earned a wonderful personality, and attracted many.
The heavy strain of such an active life began to tell on her about three years ago. It was considered advisable that she should retire. She then took up her residence at Balwyn, and decided to try and rest. But rest was impossible for her. She had the one continual longing to keep up her work, and continued her activities, but at great sacrifice to herself. She always wanted to be once more. (and as she often expressed it), "in dear old Port again" with her many friends.
Mrs. Porritt's body was buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery, and many of the local residents were present at the grave to pay their last respects. Mrs. Porritt leaves a husband, two sons (Messrs. Arthur and Leonard Porritt), and also a little girl (Yvonne).14
