  • 7 Sep 1901, ASHLEY-OHLFF. The marriage of John Herbert, fourth son of the late Mr. Edmund Ashley, Chesterfield, St. Kilda, and Marguerite Anna Klise, only daughter of Herr and Madame Ohlff, Dalgety-street, St. Kilda, was celebrated in Christ Church, St. Kilda, on Wednesday, August 28. The decorations were by the church guild, Mrs. Stanley Low kindly giving the wedding bell. The Rev. J. Stanley-Low officiated. Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" was played on the organ. The bride was given away by her father. The best man was Mr. W. A. M. Blackett, and the groomsman Sir. T. Ashley. The bridesmaids were Miss Olga Hicks and Miss Gladys Gallagher, the bride's cousin. The wedding gown was of white silk, trimmed with white silk spotted net, with wreath and veil. The bridegrooms gift was a brooch set with pearls, diamonds, and sapphires. Miss Ohlff carried a shower bouquet of white violets and snowdrops. The bridesmaids were in white silk, with large black hats. They wore gold cable bracelets, the bridegroom's gift, and carried bouquets of pink carnations, tied with pale-blue ribbons. Wedding tea was served at the residence of the bride's parents, about 50 guests being present. The travelling dress was of navy, blue, with hat to match.6
  • 20 Apr 1923, A bush fire broke out in the gully in front of "Lynwood," Mr Wilson's property, last Monday afternoon, and soon swept the sides of the hills. Mr Jack Ashley's house was in great danger of being burnt, but owing to the splendid efforts of the residents who turned out in force to beat back the fire, the homestead was saved. The flames were within a few chains of the house, and an anxious time was spent by Mrs Ashley and family.7
  • 1 Jun 1923, General regret has been expressed throughout the district at the Ashley family leaving these parts. They came here two years ago and are very popular. Mr Ashley has sold "Kyogle" to Mr Brumley, who is at present in Mr Hurditch's cottage; he takes possession on June 18.8

  • 17 Dec 1965, Death of Upper Beaconsfield Resident
Many throughout the district learnt with deep regret of the death of mr George Thomson, well-known Upper Beaconsfield estate agent, which sad event occurred at the Alfred Hospital on Sunday night, following a collapse at his home earlier in the day.
Mr Thomson had not enjoyed good health for some time.
A resident of the district for 27 years Mr Thomson had taken a keen interest in all local organisations. He was very highly esteemed.
Particularly was he closely associated with the Football and Cricket Clubs.
All feel deeply for his wife and son Ric, in the great loss they have suffered.
The funeral, which was largely attended took place at Springvale on Wednesday.40
