  • 18 Feb 1892: TOPICS OF THE DAY.
It has been reported to the police that Mr Herman Durre, the landlord of the Buck's Head Hotel, Little Lonsdale street, has been victimised to the extent of L7 through cashing a valueless cheque.
About three weeks ago a young man named Lang, who purports to be a jockey, called on Mr Durre after 12 o'clock on a Saturday and asked for change of the cheque, saying that he got it from a well-known sporting doctor. As Mr Durre had previously cashed a cheque brought by the same man which was duly honored, he had little doubt, of the genuiness of the present one. On being tendered, however, to the bank on which it was drawn at Williamstown, it was returned as of "No value." The matter has been placed into the hands of the detectives.14

  • 10 Mar 1891: An action for the specific performance of a contract for sale was decided before Mr. Justice Webb in the Third Civil Court yesterday. Alfred Wm. Breeze claimed to have entered into a written contract to buy two sections of land, containing about two acres, at Berwick, from Charles Aurisch, on July 29, 1889, for which he was to pay £200.
Breeze deposited £150 cash, and gave a promissory note at 12 months for the remainder. The promissory note was provided for when due, but Aurisch refused to execute a transfer of the land, saying that he had only intended to sell one section, and that if two sections were mentioned in the contract for sale the second had been fraudulently included. He also stated that although the amount of the promissory note had been paid into the bank at Berwick he had not appropriated it to his own use, and he entered a counter claim to have the contract cancelled. The plaintiff asked that the defendant might be ordered to execute a transfer of the land, or in the alternative for £370 damages. Mr. Moule appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. MacDermott for the defendant. His Honour gave judgment for the specific performance of the contract, the defendant to execute a transfer of the property, the counter claim to be dismissed, and the defendant to pay the costs. Carl Aurisch8

  • 12 Jun 1952: GENEROUS BEQUEST TO HOSPITALS
Eleven Melbourne hospitals have received £5500 bequeathed to them by the late Mr. John Holt, race horse trainer, of Frankston-street, Mordialloc.
The trustees said the payment was made following the recent death of Mr. Holfs sister, Miss Margaret Mary Holt, who died in a private hospital last month. The death of Miss Holt occurred within 12 months of the death of her brother.
The deceased woman was a very gracious, gentle lady, possessing qualities of friendship and grace which seemed to belong to another era. She was most generous to all charitable appeals made to her, and for years was the loyal and trusted confidante of her brother Jack. Although Miss Holt could not be called a lover of horse racing, she loved horses, and numbers of the very famous gallopers which passed through Jack Holt's stables were her own special pets.
The greatest day of the year for Madge Holt was Jack Holt's Day at St. Brigid's, Mordialloc, on which day for many years she acted as hostess to the boys and girls of the school at a Christmas sports meetino and afternoon tea. Jack Holt's Day is to continue so long at St. Brigid's school exists thanks to the generosity of Mr. Holt who set aside a sum in his will to ensure that; but the hostess will be missing. A large congregation attended Requiem Mass, celebrated by Rev. J. English, P.P., in St. Brigid's Church, on May 16, and the funeral took place at the cemetery at Berwick in which district Miss Holt was born.
Rev. J. Hardy conducted, the burial service assisted by Father English and Fr. O'Farrell. Pall-bearers were Messrs. W. J. O'Keefe. T. Hammond, N. Hodder, W. Duncan, Eugene Gorman and A. Lechte. Noticed among the mourners In the church were Revs. T. Daly, P.P., and G. Fitzpatrlck, P.P.. Rev. J. Griffen, Miss Nora Donnellan and Mrs. J. Demby (cousins), and racing personalities, Frank Dempsey, W. Duncan, T. Hammond, Neil Hodder, L. Meenan and J. Savage. Also present were Messrs. E. Gorman and A. Lechte, Cr. and Mrs. George Woods, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Trait, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. O'Keefe, Mrs. Conroy, Miss Marie Conroy, Miss Eily Ryan, Dame Mary Daly, Mr. Michael Chamberlain and Sister Nan Kelly.
